O.K., you guys...
What is the premise? What's the plot? Where's the conflict? Why does the spectator care about what you are doing? How can you get that momentary suspension of disbelief? (Oh, I HATE that phrase, it is so overused and under-understood...) Am I nuts? Isn't this JUST a card trick? What is the big deal? Do the trick for the trick's sake - maybe I'm over analyzing... Okay Paul,
I’ll take a crack. I’ll even use the pickpocket theme. Premise, plot, conflict…. You are making me think here, that is suppose to be a good thing… “ I used to be a pick pocket. A dip they called me, a lot of people still do. You know when you practice being a pickpocket a lot of people use some crazy devices. One old timer had strung bells inside of his jacket and the pockets. Little sleigh bells, ya know? He made me dip him until the bells stopped chiming. Making the dip quiet is only half the battle though. The other half is getting the swag to your pouch without a tell. I mean, when you do it right it should look like a magic trick I guess. Let me show you with this deck of cards. I’m going to put the box over here and now I’m going to take thirteen cards. Let’s count them together… Okay, look. This king and this ace are the wallet and watch. The rest? Phone numbers, pens, assorted BS that I don’t want. Now I’m going to close the stack and set it here on the table. Now watch me. Boom, there’s the move did you see me get in there? Okay let’s spread them out. 11 cards, lucky eleven, let’s see if I got the right two (spread flip the cards). Yeah their gone, but did you see where I put them? No? Great. I put them back in the card case (Slowly slide the two cards out of the card case). Now I know your thinking that’s pretty good, but you don’t know the best part yet. For a guy like me that just that isn’t enough of a challenge so I went the extra mile. (you now upturn the card box and three or four sleigh bells roll out onto the table with a jingle). Only a real dip would do something that silly don’t you think?” Premise, plot, conflict? How’d I do? Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Hi guys,
I usually don't roam around this section of the Café but I am certainly glad I did toady. There are some great thoughts floating around here. I thank all of you for your inspiration in this wonderful art of magic! Danny, that is one hell of a plot! Great routine ya got there. I especially love the kicker when the bells roll out! You have a way with words that brings the magic to life. Scott Guinn also has that talent. Thank you for sharing...and please KEEP IT COMING! nalu |

Nice Danny!
You got a way with words, you ought to be dropping short stories in the mail. If you don't mind, I'll take a poke at the thing too - I might change the structure a bit but I'll stay with your basic concept. The story reads well, but that is how you wrote it - to be read, not said... If you were really gonna do that you'd need to add a bit to it to make it play, I think... START by showing the sliegh bells, say three of them... "I carry these around for good luck - they belonged to a mentor of mine and he used them to teach me..." Now go into your explanation about pickpocketing. Put the bells away (Just drop them in your pocket and apparently forget them.) "I've decided to use my powers for good not evil..." (this said VERY tongue-in-cheek!) "So, now I warn folks about things like pickpocketing, and have a little fun doing it - here, I'll show you how it might look. Cut off a few cards and let's look at them..." Take the deck out, remove it from the cardcase, and casually put the case down in front of the spectator (I might look for someplace to put it, and not finding anywhere, drop it in his pocket.) I'm bringing NO attention to the cardcase, I don't want to tip where anything will wind up yet... Take the cards from the spectator and look through, counting and finding the ace and king. Mix the ace and king back in the stack and hand the cards to the spectator to safeguard. Back to your presentation - you ask about him seeing you do the move. When he counts he finds the stack two cards short and the ace and king missing. "Feel pretty safe there do you? - watch this! Did you see the move..." Etc. etc. per your above presentation... "Didn't hear the bells either, did you? See getting the loot is only half the battle - putting it away without getting caught is the other half..." You grab the cloth of your trouser leg and shake it, as if that's where the missing cards are, and you've managed to sneak them in without sounding the alarm - no sound! (They saw you put the bells in your pocket, they should make some noise..) "You never go to your own pocket with the loot, that would be evidence if you got caught...", Turn your pocket inside out - it is completely empty, not only no cards, NO BELLS! "You drop it with your accomplice - we call him "the catcher"..." Now you pick up the box, remove the cards, and shake the bells out afterwards... FINIS I've left a lot of detail out of this presentation (ROUGH DRAFT!), but you get the idea... Best, PSC

Nice!
Those additions make A LOT of sense. I'm glad we got this thing rolling. Wow, this is a great thread. Thanks P. Best, Dan- P.S. I'll be back with more just busy as heck here at the day job. If we're going to use a pick-pocket theme, perhaps we can use other props besides cards. These are just some ramblings...the bare bones of a presentation and approach...
Invite a man and woman on stage. The man is wearing a jacket. "Thank you so much for coming up here to help me. I promise this won't hurt a bit. (Look at the audience) Much. I couldn't help but notice that you, sir, are wearing a jacket. But you, ma'am, are not, and you look a bit chilly. Here…wear mine." Take your jacket off and help her put it on. "That's good. I have another reason for letting you wear my jacket, and that's because I'm going to show you a lesson that I learned a long time ago. You see, I had the misfortune once of having my pocket picked in a square in Delhi, India. And in Munich, Germany. And in Kyoto, Japan. And Rome, Italy. And Hoboken. It took me a while, but I finally decided that I had to do something about it, so I bought some of these…" Show the audience the bells. "You see, I figured that if I put these in my pocket, then if someone tried to get into it, I'd hear the bells, and I'd catch them. Here, let me just put these right here…" Apparently put the bells in her side pocket. Shake the jacket, making them ring (there's actually a sound gimmick in your sleeve). "Now you're pick-pocket-proofed. Feel secure? And you, sir, do you have anything in your side pockets?" Help him check them out to make sure they're empty. "Now, ma'am, if you'll reach inside with your right hand to the inner left jacket pocket, you'll find something there…" She does and brings out folded money in a clip. "Be careful, that's my travel money. Because this pocket is pick-pocket proofed, that's where we want to keep this." Apparently put the money in her side pocket with the bells. Shake the jacket, making the bells ring. "Now, your job, sir, being the thief that I know you can be, is to simply steal the money from our young lady here. All it takes is a furtive motion as you pass by her." Have the lady take a couple of steps toward the man as he walks toward you. They pass each other and exchange places. "Ma'am, did you feel anything?" She says no. "But wait…" Walk up to her and shake her jacket. There's no sound. "Better reach inside and check your money." She does, but says the pocket is empty. Help her remove the jacket and guide her to check the various pockets. She finds nothing. Walk over to the man and shake his jacket. Everyone can hear bells ringing. "Sir, would you show us what you have there?" The gentleman reaches in and pulls out the bells and the money. Turn to the woman. "Are you missing anything else?" Turn to the man. "What do you have in the other pocket?" He reaches in and pulls out HER watch. "And how about this pocket here?" He reaches in and pulls out HER bracelet. "Well, I guess we see who's the real professional here, don't we?" L- |

Hey Lance,
You're making somthing pointless and innane into an artistic work of magic. This was supposed to be another stupid card trick discussion. Next thing you know, someone's gonna take the ace assembly plot, use four cover cards and make the routine work for poker context. Then what? -Jonathan

I am turned on by this thread here. I would like to share just a thought that comes to mind as I have been watching the evolution of this routine.
I like the premise of the pickpocket theme and all of the actions within. But where is the brain buster. Here is what has jumped inside my mind to really take it to the next level. Remember this is simply a thought. Have you ever seen the movie Sixth Sense, in which the climax of the movie completely twists the reality of what you have been watching? What if you were to tell the audiance about a story you once heard about a pickpocket that went through life doing this and that whether usng cards etc. But at the end of the efect you have gone to telling them this story about a pickpocket and somehow have them make the revelation that the pickpocket you are telling them about is you. But let them make that revelation themselves and then they realize they have been had by the best. If this is not clear let me know and I will reword it. I feel there is something magical when their mind comes to the revelation without being told and the moment it dawns on them it's too late, you were there way before them and you just look into their eyes with a big grin when they look up at you at that moment of realization. I think this is a wonderful thread but get the feeling that this is only the beginning and not the end. To me it is almost like you guys are finished with the process of a complete routine, when actually the beginning of creation is only now coming to light. Cheers, I will be following this thread to the end I hope it lasts a good six months to a year. |

That's a pretty good idea there Reed. Maybe it's even too good for a cards across plot? It definitely made me think - if something comes out of that thinking I'll post again.

Unfortunately I haven't even heard of this effect! I wish I had before and probably would have got it when I had some money.
Anyway, about Reed's post: many mentalists and magicians alike have used the power of suggestions and assumptions in magic. This throws the spectators rationality and forces them to think 'outside the box' (a term I hate using, but you get the idea). They are not stuck in the usual cognitive processes and should be more open to receiving and even believing your magic. Prosperous days and long nights, Chase |

Gary Norsigian has a really good routine made for parlour/stage of cards across. And I'm sure it can be translated for the street. It just takes a lot of work.

Bruce Kalver has a slick method for cards across, very deceptive.
