I've been working the cups and balls routine in Mark Wilson's course with a little of the one in Tarbell's first volume thrown in. I've been using all kinds of cups; paper coffee cups, plastic Dixie cups, snuff glasses, etc. The balls have been sponge, crocheted (wife and mother-in-law are crafters), golf, etc. I'm ready to get a good set. I would like some recommendations. There are a lot out there; copper brass, alum, wood. Also, are combos really worth the added price? My budget is 25 to 40 dollars. I would be grateful for any feedback and guidance.
Thanks in advance, Rudy |

Working within your budget, I would suggest the Bazar DeMagia set, click HERE for more info. They will take standard lacrosse balls as final loads, available in any sporting goods store.
The aluminum Bazar cups will run about $35 with shipping. While they are certainly decent, you would do much better in the long run to go for the brass Bazar set, about $65 with shipping. I have used these for several years and been very pleased with them; they are heavy, wear well, and ring nicely when hit (softly!) with a wand. Copper cups will run you even more. There are cheaper cups out there (from India), but they use thinner metal and are not a good value. Don't forget to get a nice magic wand, about 12-14" long, it will help your moves and presentation immensely. Even a cheap plastic wand is fine, and will not scratch or dent your cups. My own opinion is that a combo set is not really necessary, with good sleights and moves you can duplicate anything a combo set can do, and you will not have to worry about where the chopped cup is. However, there are some very good routines available for a combo set, and some folks swear by them, so your mileage may vary, as they say. But if your budget is tight, I'd say invest in a better standard set rather than spending more for the combo feature. Good Luck! SETH

Those prices are pretty close. The brass cups now list for $69 and the aluminum for $29. Those prices are subject to whatever the dealer wants to do.
I agree about the combo cups. Learn on a standard set. Then, if you decide to go with combo cups, you can get a really nice combo set.

Rudy,
I hope you get a set of cups to your liking soon... however beware, you will want another set and then another. If it were me, I would go for a copper set rather than aluminum, to me they just feel better. Good luck to you, Bruce |

Not only that, copper is getting more and more expensive every day. It's still the standard of the industry for wiring and cabling, and with all of the construction and wiring that goes on, it gets into a shorter and shorter supply.

I have a Brass and Aluminum set , I love them both. If your budget will allow it I would go or the Brass set. Don't get me wrong the Aluminum set is great I just like the feel of the Brass set. But my Aluminum set is a combo which is a plus. What every one you get just make sure you take care of it, mine are at least 15 years old, but with a little love and care the still look like new. Remember you get what you pay or most of the time.

Hi Everybody,
I been kind of busy and haven't had a chance to get back on here to thank everybody for their advice, so Thanks y'all. I had decided to get the Bazar brass set. I must have told my wife about the copper sets because she ordered a set for me. Came today, made in India, but what's a guy to do. I have got something to work with and work I need to do. I thought I was pretty solid with the routine in Wilson's Course using sponge balls and coffee cups but when I used this set with little bitty balls I had a rude awakening. I've something new to practice on. Oh Well. Anyway thanks again!! Later, Rudy |

Those cups are probably made by Uday, and they will work just fine. They are better than aluminum cups at any rate.

I don't know much, but I know aluminum cups did not make me happy. I am certain you will find them too light. They also do not oxidize. You can never get a patina or any other kind of character.
Just starting out? It still matters I really recommend heavy over light. (Listen to the guy with the gold hat!!) |
