I started learning a cups and balls routine recently and performed it on the street for the first time today.
I've been busking locally for about a year now. Basically setting myself up as a booth where passersby can see some close up magic. I started doing it to get experience dealing with the unexpected. (no shortage of THAT on the street)But I've kept it all pretty small. Card tricks, spoon bends, some stuff for the kids, things that I enjoy, but work better for smaller audiences. (for me anyway) However, due to a good bit of encouragement from friends, family, and especially members of my local magic club, I've started aiming for larger crowds. Hence the cups and balls. I got a GREAT deal on some sweet, big, copper cups. They were all shiny and pristine.(Not anymore, sorry Bob. Oh and PM me with notes if you read this.) I obviously still have work to do and I'm very diligent. But I was pretty confident I could do it. The people enjoyed it and that's what really matters most to me. And I had a great time too. So, just letting you know that magic is alive and being well received in Northwest Arkansas. And that I'm super stoked. Thanks for reading.
So sorry I soiled your precious eyes.

When you say a booth, are you working under a "canvas" sideless tent, or what? Cups and Balls, I think, seems best seen out in the open. Though you do need to keep the crowd towards the front of you - no views from the back.
The presentation makes the magic.

No views from the back? Well, there goes the circle show. What does Gazzo say when someone sees something? "You think I care?" Or Sunny Holiday, "Those people behind me can see what's going on, but they couldn't do it...not in a thousand years."

Magicol,
I just set up my table on the sidewalk or curb or wherever I think I'll get some action. I built the table from Mark Wilson's Complete Course. I say "booth" because I never really tried to build a crowd.(until recently) I'd just get people to come over to see my card routines or other close-up stuff that is well suited for small audiences. However, I noticed that sometimes I would get a crowd around but I didn't have much material that would play to a bigger audience. Hence the cups and balls. I've basically been experimenting and slowly building a "show". I'll be incorporating a Strait Jacket escape soon. (Jay Leslie is THE MAN) But I think that will require alternating shows. Which will be good for keeping people's interest since my paternal responsibilities prevent me from traveling and I really want to continue making money locally with street performing.
So sorry I soiled your precious eyes.

I am glad you started doing this on the street. You and I both share the newbie cups street performing club for the summer of 2008. I never thought I would be able to do it or do it well for that matter. However everytime I have done it, it gets better and better and the cash just piles up.

Doing it well.
I'm convinced that people think I'm good only because they haven't seen many other magicians. I am my own worst critic.
So sorry I soiled your precious eyes.

Add me to the list of Cups and Balls newbies. My first day on the street was July 5th. A card trick then cups and balls. Repeat. It was a thrill.
Since that day my girlfriend has joined me and we now do a two person show. The cups and balls are still in there but we have a different ending.

Just for the record, I use the Gazzo cups. They are great. Nice and big. They seemed a little awkward when I first started with them, but now anything smaller is awkward.
Think BIG.
