Amen, Terry.
And I don't fault those with other opinions. As a Southern Baptist, I have had to fight my share of battles with "legalism." Perhaps I should have pointed out that, all profits from the sales of these items go back into the support of the ministry. I have started at ground zero, and have had to rebuild my supply of props from my high school days (gone the way of parent's yard sales, etc.) This is something I have felt compelled to do for over a year. Also, I have written gospel-based routines to include in most all of the items for sale (i.e., ball and vase could represent the tomb and the resurrection, etc.)for witnessing opportunities (as long as the school doesn't catch the children doing it.) I also have pictures, of which 10% go back to the church's children's ministry. Personally, I would be uncomfortable with BOR in the sanctuary proper (some may call that splitting hairs--just me.) As a sidebar, this is the kind of thing that lights my fire... an interaction of viewpoints between both newbies to the forum, such as myself, and those with hundreds of presentations under their belts... such as Terry. I consider myself the benefactor regardless. P.S. To Wes, Jesus ALWAYS discerns the motives of the actions, not the actions themselves. It is quite clear from the scripture that the money-changers and those in the temples selling sacrifical animals were in it for the profit. I am not, though I can only speak for this poster. Thank you all. What a constructive conversation! |

Wes asked:
"Since when should our actions be decided by the court of public opinion?" Our actions are currently decided and dictated by the U.S. Supreme Court, but since it's unlikely they will spend time deciding something of this nature, the opinions of a majority of fair and honest people (the court of public opinion) seems reasonable enough. In my opinion, of course. Jeff |

Sounds like rationalizing to me.

When it's concerning the Kingdom of God, the Word is the final authority, not the court of public opinion. We should make sure what we do in the realm of Gospel magic in conduct of character and material we are presenting that it lines up with the Word.

Ben Franklin pointed out that "the sting in any rebuke is the truth".
Some of you might wish to reflect on that. I simply pointed out how it looked to me. If you wish me to go further, I will say that I listen to others, and have heard many laypeople make the same comments. Reject or afirm that as you wish. However, if the only way I could make enough money to go on, was through BOR, I like to think I would give it a great deal of thought, and sell something that would avoid the comments I have heard in the past. All the more so, if my venue were a Gospel one. |

Any BOR sales or in the foyer sales should have a nice display, everything that you do reflects on your ministry or business. Jay Marshall once pointed out that if we believe in the importance of the message why do we package it so poorly.
So tacky whether on stage or BOR is not good whether your in church or a secular event. |
