Roger Smith, best known for MaxiTwist and breathtaking performances of "The Trick that Can't be Explained" passed away this evening after a relatively brief battle with cancer.
As was his wont, he didn't tell many people about the seriousness of his illness, and during the course of the past year, I found him to be a funny, entertaining, well-read, and energetic man of many interests and talents. His magic could be infuriatingly mysterious; his manner often cavalier, but he was always thinking -- of ways to improve his magic, his methods, and his world. Thanks for a terrific friendship. We will all miss you. |

I can honestly say that he is the only person so far to truly perform something so perfectly... that to this day he is the only person to create a true, powerful, "moment of magic" for me that will never be explained.
We will, indeed, miss you. |

Roger was a dear friend of mine and we spent a lot of time together while he lived in Abilene. He was always ready to perform as long as there was a deck of cards or a quarter nearby. When I told my wife of his passing last night she was able to recall all of the magic that she had seen him perform over the years, that is truly amazing. So was Roger "machine gun" Smith.
I will miss you, my friend. Lonnie |

Last night when I got the call about Roger I was half asleep, I had to call and ask this morning to make sure it wasn't just a bad dream. I hoped it was.
Roger was a major hand in shaping what I know of card magic. Almost everytime I learned something new I would show it to him and he would teach me the 'right' at to do it. Or at least 5 othr ways of doing it. I was always amazed at the level of thought he was constantly working on. One of the most intelligent people I have ever known. He will be surely missed. I feel very honored to have known Roger. He was always willing to help and offer his advice. My two favorites that he did were of course the two mentioned above "The Trick That Cannot Be Explained" and "Maxi-Twist," and his "Ultra Move" is one of the most deceptive things I have seen in some time.
For those of you NOT in the know, Rog posted 1 video (that I know of) to You Tube. His handeling of Maxi Twist. http://youtube.com/watch?v=p1BImRhMBRA We use to always argue (in good fun) about his original ending vs. the ending that many do which is the Bill Malone ending. He always said "it was a great trick until Bill Malone screwed up the end to it." I have watched it over and over today just to hear his soft spoken voice. Rog...you were a good man, and a dear friend and I will miss you greatly. Give em' heck up there buddy...
