A while ago I got this...
http://www.doctorzenitram.com/Images/baba.jpg I believe it is supposed to be Baba Yaga... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_Yaga I really would love to use her in my act but have no idea how to do it. I don't want to do anything though that can possibly damage her. Anyone have any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.
Will you, won't you, ESP with me?

She's beautiful! And that's who she is.
Tell a Baba Yaga story with her, and put her down. Then she starts moving, and the fun begins! She wouldn't have to move a lot, to initiate all kinds of other things. She could even be in a box, when animated. How's your ventriloquism? There's a shamanist tradition of animating puppets, stretching back to the Stone Ages, especially in Siberia and its offshoot cultures. Gee, I wonder how they did that?

How did they do it? That's easy. First you find a deep dark cave in the middle of nowhere. At the entrance to the cave, pass out candles or torches to the audience so they will be sure to see very well. Previous performances have left black soot from the smoke all over the walls and ceiling of the cave. Hmmm. Methinks the black arts are at work here.

Dr. Zenitram,
Often with beloved puppets and marionettes... the spirit of a past owner can still hold some connection with the puppet. While the connection is not usually strong its effect does explain this universal fear of puppets and dummies in the dark. Show off Baba Yaga's actual marionette movements freely while spinning a dark story about the past owner...then take her and suspend her from a hook, walk completely away, sit and join the audience in silent concentration upon the hanging puppet. After the appropriate build up she WILL suddenly raise an arm or suddenly twitch her broom so that it sways. As Harley said...she need not move much. Velcro Richard Taylor's Real Ghost under her dress and you will suddenly discover several movement possibilities. None of which will harm her and you won't be near her when she moves. |

Artist/writer Mike Mingola creator of the comic book Hellboy uses Baba Yaga frequently in the serie. Look it up for inspiration, there are several volumes of Hellboy around.

In your routine, she does not necessarily have to be the focus of your magic,
she can be the conduit of the magic, for instance if you talked about her and her magic house, you could perhaps use a haunted-key effect as the key to her front door, you could even use a chicken-foot as a keychain, then Baba is putting out the power to make the magic happen but not part of the magic itself, that make sense? Chicken foot animated. Chicken foot pendulum.
Puppet hand twitches toward chicken foot, which responds by... They were interactive, Baba and her chicken-legged house. The legs enabled her to go toward things she wanted, and away from people that wanted her. They raised the house in the air, when she didn't want to see someone, and lowered it when she did. With the house raised, you could be trapped inside.

Mention that she was sometimes portrayed as an evil character, however many people have went searching for her to gain her wisdom.
From their you could use her as an oracle for a Q&A act maybe? Just c****r T**r and one ahead could be used? Or perhaps some other peek to your liking. You can then burn the billets as a ritual that was used to seek her out? Just an Idea... and by the way don't forget to check out the Baba Yaga piece from Modest Mussorsgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" or maybe the orchestrated version by Ravel. the E.L.P. is probobly not something youd want to use for this, but is a nice album btw. Funny, Baba Yaga is one of the main focus of my new story/routine called "Prikaza".
My friend Carl Gibson is currently translating it along with the one on Coney Island. So, you've to wait a little... |
