It depends if you keep your show in a can or a bottle.

Once in a while I'll start my show by telling everyone that I just went out and bought a book on how to perform the perfect magic show, and in that book it said you need to get everyones attention by starting your show with a really BIG opener. At that time I grab a large duffle bag that's been sitting up on my table and pull out a giant bottle opener that's over 2 feet long. It always gets a lot of laughs and groans as well.

The best opener you can do is a joke, or a quick funny bit that'll make them laugh. I have tried doing many different things but this has always been the best way to set the stage for a comedy act, in my personal opinion.
(And I keep my show in a can.)

I agree with god-glorified, I start out out every show with at least a three to five minute funny intro about myself, or something that happened to me, that's the only real way to connect with the audience. Once they connect and like you the strong material gets that much better. They will forget most of you effects, but still remember you and that's most important.
