Peter Samelson has a routine called 'Cigarette and Thimble' in his book
'Theatrical Close-up'. |

I don't know any routines, but the thimble vanish itself is one of the best vanishes there is in my opinion. I'd think there should be some good routines out there.

There are many. Check the old books by Duke Stern, Hugard, Enochs.

If you can find it, pick up a copy of Joe Mogar's book (written by Steve Beam), "Digital Effects."

And even after the explanation, when Steve performed the routine again, we were still blown away! I think, but am not certain, that somewhere Joe might have also released this on a video. Check with Steve Beam.

Patrick page has a nice routine.
I like thimbles myself and am working on some stuff. "Automatic Thimbles" is/was a great video and has some great magical moments. Too bad people are allergic to videos and only buy DVDs. That video is great if you can find it.

While thimbles aren't my thing, John Carney has a wonderful version suited for close-up or parlor.

Are all these routines doable in street magic? |

Shoot Ogawa's DVD is very impressive for multi colored, ungimmicked thimble routines. I went through a phase where I bought everything "thimbles." In the end I took the easy road. An old Royal nesting set with booklet.

The most impressive thimble act I saw up close and personal was Bobby Baxter. It was early one morning (2 AM) in York after a Larry Weeks convention. Bob Rheinhardt, a very old name in magic had the keys to this "club" as he put it, and we all were in awe of his NY savvy. It was McBride, Myself, Bobby Baxter (great thimble artist), and Reinhardt walking into this huge room which suddenly lit up when a butler came by to light the way. The walls were all mahogany and the chairs were all fine leather. Twelve foot ceiling, and great mahogany doors with gold handles, and we went through ten rooms to a private room at the end. This was the Harvard Club in NY. Rheinhardt persuaded Baxter to do some magic, and he obliged by doing his entire thimble act, producing 10 thimbles as a finale after showing his bare hands. Next, McBride would do his card act with split fans, interlock, and cards from everywhere. What a night.

Hey,
I have found that most any thimble trick would be do-able in a street settings. Just give it a shot. Since most thimble routines don't require much setup, if any, they should be pretty easily translated to the street. Let us know what you find out. Thanks, Matt! |

You may get some weird looks on the street with thimbles!
Joe Mogar's Thimble Dexterity DVD is very good. An encyclopedia of thimble work although it is quite a different style than Jeff McBride's work on thimbles in World Class Manipulations. Here is my review of Joe's DVD including a listing of everything you'll find on the DVD. http://magic-yeti.blogspot.com/2008/02/r......joe.html
