This is a really neat idea, I think so at least. At the 2008 World Magic Seminar in Las Vegas, Rachel Colombini demonstrated an EASY "book test" using a copy of Ben Hur. It costs only $10 at can be obtained at http://www.wildcolombini.com and is entitled "Words of Wisdom", found under the stage magic catagory. In essence, a spectator calls out any number between one and sixty- and the magician informs him of the first three words on that chosen page of the Ben Hur book they are holding.
After the excellent Colombini lecture in Vegas(who, by the way, will also be lecturing soon at the Grand Rapids IBM 211 Ring), I personally talked to Aldo and Rachel and they gave me permission to share this idea with FCMers. I used the exact same method of "Words of Wisdom" to hand out the free 64 page booklet of the Gospel of John entitled "The Story of God" available from the International Bible Society (www.IBSDirect.com). The four colored book marks used in the trick I modified to explain four themes (using different colored symbols)from the Gospel of John: Birth and Miracles, Cross, Salvation and Heaven. On the back of the book marks I have a few notes and verses for me on each topic, depending on what color is selected. I then inform the spectator of the first three words of the top of the numbered page that they selected earlier from the Gospel of John that they are holding in their hands from the beginning of the effect. Of course, they can keep the booklet if they'd like if they would like to read the entire booklet later! Our web site is linked/printed inside: http://www.ChristianMagician.org, which also links to http://www.needGod.com. So without giving away the secret, I would encourage you to purchase this trick from the Columbini web site, then think about modifying the effect to whatever bit of lengthy Christian literature you have that you'd like to distribute: probably up to 75 pages or so. Hope you can use this idea... |

If the performer is told the page number, and the spectator is limited to the first three words of the page, won't this come across more as a memory feat, especially if one uses a 75 page or less book?
My bias against book tests that appear to have a number of limitations in selecting pages and words is showing! Terry

Well, without giving the method away, check out http://www.wildcolombini.com, the ad for Words of Wisdom states (which is true) you can use ANY book. You could probably stretch this particular "book feat" method to even 100 pages or more I guess, and even to the first five or six words on the page if you'd like. For the sixty two page handout Gospel of John I use, to be able to name the first three words on any page number named, that seems pretty puzzling to folks. So it could be a "book feat" too, it is just a suggested way of handing out a Gospel of John in an usual fashion as part of accomplishing a "magic trick" feat for folks to enjoy. Not really "mentalism", you don't certainly have to ask the spectator to "concentrate on the words" and all that kind of balogny... Aldo's website, in my view, has many fine magic effects and books on it, all limited to $10 as the top sale price.

I like the idea. Wish I had thought of it.

By the way, type in the words David Ginn at the http://www.youtube.com website. David has posted there something like 50 effects you can watch him do, most of which he sells... David did a great job with his lecture last week at Abbott's. Another good website other than http://www.ChristianMagician.org (click on the word "videos) is http://www.abratube.com
