Hey Everyone,
I've been thinking about organizing a local event to help raise money for a local charity (as well as helping me gain local press attention)... Downtown, there's an indoor go-cart racetrack and I was thinking it would be cool to do a blindfold driving demonstration and raise money at the same time! This came to mind for several reasons... 1. I'm pretty sure our local law enforcement won't allow me to drive through the city with a blindfold on... 2. I doubt local car dealerships would be willing to let me borrow a fancy convertible to use for this demonstration and we find ourselves dealing with #1 again! and... 3. If I can pull of this smaller event, then I'd have concrete evidence that would help me organize something bigger and #1 and #2 would be more likely to happen for a future event! I've mentioned to the owners of the indoor track my idea and they would like to discuss it more... so I'm not concerned of rejection there! I would like to find local sponsors who would be willing to help make this event happen and/or donate to a local charity of choice. I was thinking they could donate a specific amount per lap, etc... How do I find the right charity? Are there forms that need to be written up for this? Would I be crazy to ask for 10% or more of the proceeds for my involvement? Thank you for your help, -Bryan p.s.- I will be using Osterland's "Dark Vision Hood" and Stainless Blindfold... |

What about # 2 at a sporting event! They would have the field/track, and the crowd. This would be a win-win-win!!!

Great idea Blair! It sounds like we might have the Indoor Cart track lined up... I just received an email from them to meet again next week to go over the details. They seem pretty excited!

What if you have local celebrities (mayor, sporting people etc) to stand on the track DURING the demo? Add some danger!

Bryan,
Sounds like it could play in the press well and be a fun stunt. Here are a couple of thoughts regarding your questions: You wrote: "I would like to find local sponsors who would be willing to help make this event happen and/or donate to a local charity of choice. I was thinking they could donate a specific amount per lap, etc..." That's going to take a lot of work. In order to raise any significant amount of money you would need many contributors, and would have to complete many laps. I think the stunt (and the car) could run out of gas before you raised much money. Why not use the stunt to promote a show and donate a portion of the proceeds to the charity. That would take care of another of your concerns: "Would I be crazy to ask for 10% or more of the proceeds for my involvement? " I think you should have your expenses covered, but the rest goes to charity. If you are promoting a show, however, you could split the gate and earn your money that way. You asked, "How do I find the right charity?" Pick one that you really care about, one that you want to raise money or awareness for. Look at events like "Breast Cancer Awareness Week,: etc, so you can have a topical tie in. Look at Chase's Calendar of Events to see if there are any special days or weeks coming up. You can usually get it free at a library , buy it on Amazon, or get a free download for a Palm device at: http://www.tucows.com/preview/74403 . Finally, you asked, "Are there forms that need to be written up for this?" You should have a healthy liability policy in place that names the venue as an additional assured. In fact, they will probably require it. Good luck. Jim |

GREAT NEWS!!!
I met with the owners this afternoon regarding this event! They were both very eager to help in any way they can. We've all put our heads together and feel Autism Awareness or Degenerative Disease that cause Partial Blindness would be a great cause to donate to. They've opened the calendar for me and said to get back to them on a specific date. I'm going to research more about these two charities and see what would need to take place to donate in a professional manner. I have several friends who are also stunt riders with street bikes that have corporate sponsorship through Rockstar and Monster Energy Drinks. I'm going to approach as many big vendors for a "one-time donation" for the event. In turn, we can hang their banner at the event! I'm new at writing proposals and hope to gather more information on that so I can approach the corporate companies with donation requests. I don't have a time in mind for this yet but feel 4-5 months from now should give plenty of time to prepare! Any insight will be appreciated greatly! -Bryan |
