Tarbell 1 has a trick involving a glass coin, and I can't seem to find one online.
Is this an outdated trick? Because it sounded like a really good trick. Anybody know where I could get one?

You can just have a glass cutter make you one....

Is that expensive?

It is a good trick, and no, it's not that expensive.

Perhaps it is not a glass coin in the practical sense, but more so a glass coin-size disk. I remember having one with a vanishing coin to glass trick when I was a kid. Think Adams Magic sold it. They use a plastic disk now for it. As for glass coins, I have never seen one that I can remember...Hmmmmmmm?
But to get glass disks, Josh makes a good suggestion with a glass cutter, or you can go to a jeweler/watch maker and see if he would sell you a suitable flat watch crystal, or you can buy a small flashlight and remove the glass lens...Something along the lines of this. You just have to find the size lens of the coin you are using. Hope that helps somewhat.

Oh, those are all great ideas. I think glass is better than plastic because of the sound.

Hello critter,
Not exactly glass, which would be better because of the sound, but here's what I use. Ice Coins by Chris Congreave. You get 4 clear disks, same size as a half dollar, that fit into a shell and a Jumbo 3" clear disk. DVD and routines. Can be used for other tricks or routines. You can end a Coins Across routine with them, which I sometimes do. Jim |

I've played around with plastic discs for this, and the sound just isn't right. Also, glass discs seems to make a better seal on the bottom of the glass than a plastic disc (this just might be in my head, though). Plus, after looking at the link, you could get 2 or 3 times the number of discs cut for the price of Ice Coins. So, unless you want to do the Ice Coins routine (which I know nothing about, by the way, so I'm not knocking it) it's cheaper and makes better magic to use real glass. Mark

Might do both. I think I can get a discount mini flashlight from my work.
The Ice Coins sound fun too, though. I do agree with the glass sound for this particular trick, though. That's what I like about it, so many angles of misdirection in this one.

Many many moons ago, this excellent trick was supplied in every magic box and, therefore, became rejected by magicians. Then came the era of plastic, and time erased the remembrance of the effect.
There are several new effects to be created using this glass disk, and the time has come to take it out of the shadow.

I was thinking about this recently as well, and asked my studio landlord (they sell glass - windows, doors, and all such things).
He gave me a perfect disk, but way too big to use as a fake half. I'm going to visit an optician and ask them. They would be sure to have what we need. |

It would be even better if I wrote some routines with them. Niiiiiiiice. My brain is now switched to the upright position.

I went to the Optician today, and he said "no problem" and "not expensive" as well.
All he needs is some glass with the same thickness as a Half $, Euro, whatever. He can do the rest. No problem. Gonna get a couple of US Halves and some 2€ pieces made for cheap. Talk to your local Optiker! |

I never found a glass cutter who could a) cut anything that small and b) do it with smooth edges. And you can waste many hours (as I did) looking for flashlight lenses that are glass and the right diameter/thickness
However, this topic comes up every few months and I always give the same advice: round craft mirrors, as sold in craft shops, can be bought very cheaply and once you've found the right size (perhaps I was lucky) just scrape off the silvering. Works for me.

Find a local lapidary hobbiest (rock hound) with the polishing machine they use to polish "Cab" stones they can cut any size any piece of glass for you, it uses wet sanding instead of glass cutting tools. My dad did both lapidary and faceting and used glass all the time for practice pieces.

There are two window and glass dealers in my town that I know will cut glass any size you want. I guess I'm lucky, though.
I do like the idea of the craft mirrors though, I'll have to look out for those.
