The group is an Elks Club. They have been using me for 7 years in a row for their Christmas Assembly. I always do a stand up parlor size show. This time in the middle of the stand up show I added the Cups and Balls on my close up table top so I could get a recording and show it to you guys.
To those who do not know about the Tommy Wonder routine. The click of the cups having the ball appear under the bag; and the ball penetration through the cups were not part of his routine. I added that because I did not want my routine to be exactly the same. I do not know if anyone noticed my dove to the left. He is more under control than the kids. Thank you again, James, for your wonderful talent of the bag with pom pom and the balls. I can see what you mean dealing with the contrast, Bill. I might get more color props from James so I am always prepared no matter what suit I wear. |

Thanks for the kind words, Dynamike.
Perhaps changing the color of the table/working mat to green would help in the contrast, not only for this routine but also for other cups and balls routine. Maybe it is the lighting but there is just too much black color. As for me I carry a case full of balls (with at least 15 different colors) when I work the cups routine. This allow me to select the right color according to the environment and lighting. I have posted somewhere that the visibility of the cups, balls and wand will also depend on the lighting (day lighting or night lightings) at the time of performance. |

Mike (Dyna), You are one brave performer. That routine is designed to control adult attention not kids. The suprizes, I think, would work better on adults too, but you've performed it (much) more than I have.
By way of critique, you were great picking up and putting down the cups in the "One slightly ahead of the other" fashion as noted in the routine. The only improvement I can spot would be in the pulling the balls up through the cups. The illusion works well (on my Tommy Wonder DVD) by the hands travelling up to the balls and then pulling them up from there, and not so far up. The speed at which you pull your hands and the balls up and away misses that moment. I'm sure you were making it play big for the huge gang of crumb-crunchers. Think of Plucking the balls from the tops of the cups. That would leave a brief beat where the balls are seen coming through the cups. I'd watch the tape again but I'm afraid the kids would charge you on the second viewing. Marvelous job. Keep going. P |

I hope you understand the real work in Zig Zag... it's in the Harbin book. If you don't know it... contact me after the 19th when I am back home and have time.
Posted: Mar 11, 2009 11:47am The reason I mention this 99 percent of those with it miss the key points. I had a long talk with Harbin about this.

To me there is a sophistication to the Wonder routine that is beyone some youth to comprehend. There may be more reaction to YOUR reaction instead of the magic that is happening. I know this is a part of children entertainment and it seems different for me as I watched you do this with the Wonder routine. I have never seen this done before and it may not be criticism, but unfamiliarity. In that unfamiliarity, I get uncomfortable. For so long I have put the Wonder routine in some cosmic region of idol worship. Man is it good.
If I were your pal, I would say to focus the routine on those that would GET IT. And that would be adults. Keep a great basic routine with colorful balls and loads that make noise for the kiddies. Maybe you would say to me, 'the kids do get it'. Then we would go get a beverage and move on with life, because pals agree to disagree. Blessings to you for putting it here and being open to read what others think of it. -Scott M |

Tommy Wonder.....
For me....HE TRULLY ENTERTAINER... His routine is one of great idea and concept I ever seen.... I read his books, watched his video several times, and I'm never bored to watch his perform and lecture, even if I've seen before..... His sleight of hand, his act, and of course his misdirection technique is one of the best ...... He has very inspired me now in learning magic.....and maybe someday, I will have great showmanship like him...... So, Tommy, RIP...and thanks for your creation.

OK, I'm thinking about tackling Tommy's 2 cup routine. I could use some suggestions.
1) What is a good set of cups to use? I've got a set of the Miller cups from Magic, Inc. from a long time ago that I'd like to use but I'm not sure the shape is conducive for the routine. I also have a set of Johnson cups that I've never really used, and I'm thinking might be good for this routine, but they seem a little short and squat. I also have a set of Gary Animal Babe cups that I use for busking, but I'm thinking that they are probably just too big. So any particular recommendations. 2) Magnetic clasp or traditional rope gimmick? I like James Tong's set and everybody seems to like it as well so I'm leaning that direction. My question is whether the magnetic clasp can or has a tendency to regrip the string attached to the bag at an inopportune time during the load. I like that the rope gimmick doesn't have those issues. However, I also like the idea that you don't have to untwist the pom pom from the string. So what are you guys thoughts on this subject. 3) The bag… It would be pretty easy to just let Mr. Tong make up the whole set for me and then just get to practicing. However, I'm concerned about the stiffer and larger velvet bag versus the knit bag that is called for in the original routine. For those of you that know, how easy is the load of the velvet bag? Am I worried about nothing? Like I said I'd like to buy the Tong set up, but really don't want to have any problems to work through if I can help it. I'd appreciate all the help and assistance you guys can provide! |
