Hello all...
I don't often come across something and have no idea what it is, where it came from or who made it. But this time I'm stumped.....anyone what to take a guess? This prop is a nearly life sized chinese boy. He seems to have had cloth legs at one time. He has a vent type head, with a spring jaw. He is mostly wood and canvas. It's a card trick of some sort, it seems he reveals a card as well as a few other things..nothing is hooked to the motor anymore. He has a very nice gramophone type clockwork motor with a very big key. It looks as if it wound cord up to pull pins. The arms are spring loaded to "pop" out from his pockets. I tend to think 1940's or so but it can be hard to tell with magic props sometimes, most of the hardware looks that old. He is dressed in yellow, with deep red trim, satin. He also had a base, also gone. I can't seem to find out anything about this so any help would be great. Thanks' Morgan

Unless it's a fancy Attaboy-type device, I don't have a clue. I wish you would post a photo, because I would love to see it. A resource such as Ron Allesi or Ken Klosterman might be your best bet.

Can you hold it a little closer to the screen? It sounds like an automaton to me.

If it's purely mechanical (rather than being partly electrical) then I'd be thinking pre-World War Two. It is possible that you have something very special indeed on your hands. The following links might help in terms of general background on automata: http://www.automates-boites-musique.com/......que.html http://www.boingboing.net/2007/10/04/chi......-au.html and the following has some potentially useful sources in the references section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automaton |
