Everything was clear, and easy to see and hear. No complaints here. Menu Play All: This plays the DVD from beginning to end. Scene Selection: With this you can access any part of the dvd. It is kind of annoying because each screen has four selections so you have to press next a lot. The DVD Demo: At the beginning a small demo video is shown. Nothing much. You could find this Demo on other sites that sell this. Dedicated To: The DVD starts off by saying “This DVD is dedicated to David Roth for revitalizing the art of coin magic.” I thought that was very nice of Mr. Ammar. Introduction: Ammar explains what will be covered in the DVD. The dvd has 3 sections. Secrets, Applications, and Major Secrets. The secrets teach you how to do the sleights. Applications for how to use the sleights (self explanatory). The major secrets are Michael talking about theory. The theory here is my favorite part of this dvd. Hiding Coins Finger Palm: Includes the Ramsey subtlety, a way of making the Finger Palm more deceptive because the hand appears to be shown empty. Classic Palm: Includes the Kaps subtlety. It makes a classic palm more deceptive because the hand appears to be shown empty. Also how to get in and out of classic palm. Thumb Palm: Also how to get in and out of thumb palm. Back Thumb Palm: A way of having your palm up yet you are concealing a coin. Downs Palm: With the right angles the hand really appears to be empty. I don’t like this much because it’s very angle sensitive. Goshman Pinch/Backclip: Showing the palm of your hands empty while in reality you are holding a coin. Applications Some tricks using these sleights. Tricky Trousers: A coin appears in a little fold you made in your pants. Then the coin is put into the fold, it vanishes and reappears inside the magician’s pocket. The coin is then placed into the pocket and magically comes through the pants. I like this one a lot. Very visual. A Sure Bet: 2 cards are selected and a coin comes out from between them into a spectators hand.. Pretty Straight forward. Phone Home Pen: A coin is produced from a pen cap. Double Your Money: A halve dollar is split into 2 visually and audibly. This is done twice leaving you with 3 coins. Completely Gone: A coin is placed in a handkerchief. The spectators check to make sure it’s still there. Then the coin vanishes. They check to make sure there is nothing there and then a coin is shown to have been there. I was very disappointed with the method for this trick. What’s In Your Ear: The magician takes an invisible coin places it through one ear and then shows that it came out through the other. (The spectator’s ear) Coin From Tie: The magician starts pulling an invisible thread from a spectators tie and then says after every invisible thread there is a coin. And a coin is shown to be under the tie. Natural Lay of Hand: How to make your palms look more natural. How palms usually look. False Transfers It’s hard to describe a vanish so I’ll just list them. Simple take Simple put Schneider vanish Le Tourniquet/French drop Reverse French drop Ammar’s loose French drop The Classic Fake Transfer (Retention Vanish) Slide Vanish (my personal favorite vanish) Friction Palm Spider Vanish Thumb Palm Transfer Classic Palm Transfer Application Silver dollar to 4 Quarters: A silver dollar changes into 4 quarters. Half dollar to 5 Dimes: As title suggests. Coin Through Table: 1 coin is pushed straight through the table. Nice sound effects on this one. Flurry: A coin appears in the performers hands which were apparently empty. Then it vanishes and reappears behind the performer’s knee. The coin vanishes again and is found on his elbow. The coin vanishes once more and then is blown out of the magicians nose. Ammar explains other finales for a coin flurry. (Jumbo coin, through pocket ect.) Simple Coins Across: 1 by 1, 4 coins travel from one hand to another and the last coin travels to join the others in the spectators hand. This is a good starting point for a coins across trick. Loading the Hand Revolve Load: A coin is loaded in the action of turning the hand over. Dai Vernon’s Thumb Palm Load: A coin is loaded under the guise of waiving your hand over it. Really deceptive. During a Wave or Gesture: Loading a coin while waving over it but this time the hand is open and shown empty. Ammars Sonic Squeeze: The magician take an imaginary coin places it into his hand, closes it and a coin appears. The coin is removed and the hand closes and another coin appears. This can be done repeatedly. I like this one a lot and plan to use it to produce coins for a coins across routine.. Copper Silver Transposition: The standard copper silver transposition. Milton Kort’s version. A copper coin is placed in the left hand and a silver coin in the right. They change places. Production and Complete Vanish: A coin is produced then vanished and your hands are left completely clean. Stealing From the Hand J.B Bobo Complete Vanish: A method to steal a coin secretly from a closed fist while turning the hand over. The Palm Down Steal: A method of stealing a coin as you point to the hand with a coin in it. Bobo’s Coin to Key: A coin is placed into your left hand and closed. The coin then turns into a key. No fishy moves. Gone: A complete coin vanish while they are holding on to your wrist. 1 Minute Coin Vanish: A coin vanishes and reappears under your watch. It’s very startling. Coin From Spectators Hand: 5 coins are placed into a spectators hand and the magician manages to get one of the coins into his own hand. Thieves Sheep and Barn: Wow this is a no sleight of hand coin trick. 8 coins are shown. 2 are the robbers and the other 6 are the sheep. The robbers each go in to separate hands. They steal the sheep one by one (right hand takes a coin then the left, right, left ect.) but at the end the robbers are in one hand and the other 6 coins in the other. Major Secrets Mr. Ammar discusses these topics at length. 1. Being natural 2. Misdirection 3. The magic wand 4. Timing 5. Practice makes Permanent not necessarily perfect He also discusses what to say when asked how a trick is done or when told do it again. He discusses “professional courtesy” and what to do when a coin falls. Gimmicks No gimmicks are used on this dvd. Teaching The teaching was excellent. Everything was explained clearly and thoroughly. Michael Ammar isn’t called the “Worlds foremost teacher of magic” for nothing. My Thoughts On: Secrets: These are the sleights. The main reason I bought this dvd was to see the timing of some sleights. Applications: These are tricks using the sleights taught. Most of these are very short and wouldn’t do well alone. They can be good as part of a bigger routine. Ammar leaves you to make that big routine. Major Secrets: This was my favorite part of the dvd. The advice here is really great. Difficulty In my opinion coin magic starts off kind of hard. It takes some practice to get a solid classic palm false transfer ect. Contrary to card magic where there are tons of self working tricks to start off with but it gets harder later on. Who I Recommend This to: I recommend this dvd to someone looking to get the timing right with some sleights. I got this to supplement Bobo’s book. Almost everything in this dvd can be found in Modern coin magic. So get this if you need help with how a certain vanish should look and things of that nature. Price At $25.84 I think it’s a good price. It’s less than most coin magic dvds. (With the 10% discount code it’s 23.26) To Sum it Up The basic sleights of coin magic are taught here in an easy to understand way. It’s fair in price, and for me was a great purchase. You take one routine, you take one sleight, and you do it better than anybody on the planet, you're going to make a name for yourself.

I feel Bobo's is the worst place to START to learning coin magic . It is great once you have a base but I don't think it is a graduated as Royal Road is .
IMHO

I was never really into coins, but chose this as my base to start, and haven't been disappointed. Quality at work.
- just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not after you!

This is a great starting point for coin work.
I still do his version of 4 coins across. I do however do the friction move at the beginning differently. Mine is more of a relaxed toss and I don't close my hand as fast as he does. I also keep eye contact with the receiving hand. I almost always get great reactions with it.

I have both DVDs. Noblezada's DVD is better produced and IS a good introduction. But Ammar's DVD is a much better instruction tool.
Also, I agree with paymerich that Bobo is a bad place to start, but it is an essential book, once you get some handle on how basic sleights and routines LOOK, like in Ammar's DVD. After that, you can look around at other artists and start seeking a personal approach and developing your style. (My personal conclusion is that coin magic is not worth the time and effort required. I do a CSB and I play around with coins for fun, but I don't have the time, skills, nor inclination to get any good at true coin work.) |
