Everyone is mixed up on this thread First of all Matt mentioned he made $7, not $8. But there were 8 people watching.
Guys Kozmo is not bashing Matt. He is just asking questions so he will know how to help guide him. Talking about bashing, you should have seen how certain members did me on a different forum. I asked Matt a question too. Matt answered my question. Now I understand more on how I would like to support him. Matt, most people want here want to congratulate you. Some others want to get information from you so they can help you. |

I'm still curious as to how long it took to make $7.
First time out? The real lessons have begun. Good for you. When guys like Koz and Danny post I listen. |

I have some GREAT news!
In just a few short weeks, Kozmo will be appearing at the Motor City Close-Up Convention. Kozmo will be performing and lecturing. Yes, LECTURING! If you have any interest at all in making your street act better, you don't want to miss Kozmo's lecture. It is jam packed with priceless tips on street performing. If you cannot make it to the convention, don't worry. In time, Kozmo will be appearing at a magic club near you with that same lecture. It may take a while before he gets to your neighborhood. But, the wait will be WORTH it. |

I will be at the Motor City Close-Up Convention too this year from November 14-16. I look forward to seeing you guys there.
The Motor City Convention will feature Kozmo, John Guastaferro, Eric Jones, and Geoff Williams. There will be a special guest performance by Brad Lancaster. There will also be some other surprises. I have heard rumors that Joan Caesar, the current I.B.M. International President, will be there. This year the special guest of honor is Karl Norman, one of the original entertainers at the legendary Forks Hotel in Buffalo, New York. Karl will be celebrating his ninetieth birthday at the convention. Kozmo will perform his hilarious street act for our entertainment pleasure. John Guastaferro will be presenting his outstanding card magic. Eric Jones is the new guy on the block to watch. His coin magic will stop you cold. Geoff Williams will entertain us with some very strong commercial magic. You can find more convention information, including the schedule of events, by going to the convention website. http://www.johnlukamagic.com/ There will be four lectures, two optional workshops and three close-up shows. The cost of the optional workshops is $25 per workshop. This is a real bargain, considering the skill of both, John Guastaferro and Eric Jones. John and Eric are exceptional performers. They have much to offer in their respective workshops. Some of the dealers signed up already include: Hank Moorehouse, Mint Magic, Gordon Miller, Zap Magic, The Wunderground, and Kozmo Magic. I hope to see you guys there. |

I'm confused....I didn't see anywhere in this thread where I saw any Koz bashing (maybe I missed it).
The only bashing I saw (if you want to call it that) was about the post where there was a reference to monkeys. I still don't understand that post. Koz I hope you continue posting since this is one of the few things I look for here. But anyway....Mat I think 7 bucks in one set (2 routines in 5 minutes) is pretty good. As already pointed out, if you do the math that's potential good money....but what do I know....see ya out there....

Ok back on topic here
magic924- Congratz, the first step is always the hardest. It takes allot of guts to get out here an do as opposed to sit there and dream. If you’re up for it try getting Jimmy's Book To Lure With Spectacle and I highly recommend Cellini's DVD's and his book as well. All are overflowing with information. Koz & Danny - Ignore the naysayer’s please. Those of us who have read your post's and know you vicariously thru your work and your blogs, well we appreciate what you do and when you have things to say we value your input. Koz am looking forward to seeing you at Kutztown and then again at your lecture in York for my buddy Mark. Keep Up the performing guys

This is funny. Some are congratulating and some are asking questions while others are ridiculing people for ridiculing people that never did ridicule people. I'm kinda confused but thanks guys. I went out to busk today but got shut down by central parks security. They just asked me to leave so not that big a deal. Anyways I have to get writing as I'm mainly a comedian and I'm being lazy right now.

Congrats on getting out there. Have you tried busking just with comedy, no magic? I have done some busking over the years. I do a little circus show, a bit of juggling, a little magic, rola-bola, lots of comedy. But lately I've been wanting to try it with comedy ventriloquism and nothing else. My problem with this is that my best and most effective stuff is audience interaction. Just doing that with my figure Henry, I'm wondering where the big finale and the hat pitch would come in? Do I just set down the hat and let it trickle in like a musician would maybe? I dunno.

David, I would allow both for trickle and hatting at the end. Some people are going to stop for little while then move on before the show finishes and could well drop something in a trickle hat. And some passersby just come up and drop a donation because they support buskers anyway, and on they walk. Then at the end do the hatting for those who stop and watch the show until its end.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to apologise for my post on Sept.11th. If it confused anyone - I'm not surprised. I wrote it, and even I don't understand it. I'd obviously posted it whilst under the influence of alcohol - in the early hours of the morning.
No offence meant, and why on earth I tried to involve Koz, is as much a mystery to me as the post...and it embarasses me. I promise.... etc... Blah.. never to post while under the influence.. blah.. etc.. ever again... :)) Cheers! DCB

Since then, either the schedule or the weather has conspired to keep me from going out again, but it will happen! Let it happen for you too! You have great potential!

I performed in open air for the first time earlier this year. I went there primarily to get experience. I was so naive that when I got a couple of donations I put them in my bag out of the way. A friend corrected me on that and gave me some other quidance. I made $NZ2 that first time. Nothing the next. Then $NZ20, and 4th time got $NZ40=about $USA28. I've still got to actually hat people - I'm tied up in enjoying interacting with the people and the money is coming 2nd in my thinking. Some of my earnings I give away - to a stall raising money for a school trip, to a fellow who wanted $1 for bus fare. I'm surely not primarily working for the money!

Firstly, I think it is a great leap of faith to take your magic to the street for the first time. A major accomplishment all by itself. Keep it fun and keep it goin, you've made it to the dancefloor, so keep on dancin until you find your inner John Travolta. You will no doubt get better every time you try.
BTW, There is nothing wrong with being nice. Dick?..no, Noble?..YES! some people really need a dollar. Don't be hesitant to follow your gut instinct about a person bold enough to ask for some change, or even a buck. It comes back to you.

I was out busking in a street mall today, for the third timeat this location, and made more than the first two times there. Things are coming together better and better. Ive written before about the fun we're having, me and the spectators. Today I'd put my scissors down and forgotten where - not in vest or trouser pockets and couldn't find them in my performing bag, and here I was trying to cut a cord for a balloon dog lead. So I told a young fellow about 9 years old, who'd been hanging around taking an interest, to have a look for them. He soon produced them while I went on with the show, and I told him "Thanks" and went over to my hat and took out a $1 and gave it to him in appreciation. You should have seen the look of astonishment and delight when I gave him the money. At one stage I had finished the Cut and Restored Rope and a fellow maybe in his 30s approached me after and said "How do you do that rope trick where you cut the rope?" I told him "Very carefully." He persisted with "If I give you $5 will you tell me how to do it? I just want to know how its done." I replied, "No, If I tell yuo the magic will be spoilt for you." And I referred him to the city library, writing down for him the name of a magic book there that has the routine in it. You never know who is a prospective magician, getting her/his impetus from seeing us perform on the street. Onward with the performances of magic! All of us guys and gals out on the street with magic have had to start somewhere, and this Café is one valuable source of help and encouragement as we share our joys and sorrows.
The presentation makes the magic.

Matt; Just getting up the nerve to try the streets is a great accomplishment. Congratulations.
Everybody contemplating making the jump ought to visit Ian Rowlands website - http://www.ianrowland.com, and check out his advice page in the "magicians only" area. Great advice about the importance of getting performance experience wherever and however you can. Good luck! |
