I just moments ago watched Barbara Walters expose the workings of the Sawing the Lady in Half illusion. This happens on today's The View during the opening talk session. Joy Behar kept telling her she shouldn't be doing this.

There are so many different methods to do the sawing in half. Which method did she reveal?

I saw that this morning. She said basically how it was done. I won't say what she said because we can't expose the secret here. She exposed it; however, it was exposed in a basic form. Everyone has heard this exposure. Most people clearly see this when the illusion is done with a pretty large box. I think anyone would still be amazed with a thin style sawing.
It was funny how all the ladies and the guy in the audience told Barbara not to tell the secret. But then she told anyway. I thought it was funny though when Meredith said sarcastically, "Gee, and I thought they were really cut in half." It was kind of disappointing to watch Barbara Walters spoil it, but I don't think she put any magicians out of business.

I never did like that woman.
Why would they do that anyway? Did it tie into something in the show or what? Seems like an odd (and stupid, and illogical, and inconsiderate, etc.) thing to do for a Barbara Walters show. What was the deal RC4MAG?

And here's the irony:
She learned it from legit magicians. Barbara Walters knows this stuff because of having worked with Mark Wilson, James Randi, and Doug Henning on a week-long TV series spotlighting the great mid-70's magic resurgence (about the time that The Magic Show was on Broadway). Barbara's show was on daytime TV and the only reason I was able to see it was because I was home sick from school that week with a bad case of flu or mumps or something (I was only about 10 years old at the time). She had interviews with the three above mentioned gentlemen (and I'm vaguely recalling that Slydini was also on this program, and a couple of other magicians, but I'm not sure) and they all performed. If I recall correctly, Mark Wilson performed the Thin Sawing with none other than Barbara Walters as the "victim". That's how she knows. I wonder if Mark signed her to a lifetime non-disclosure agreement? (I also wonder if something like that is even enforceable...but it's fun to imagine Walters hauled into court for her thoughtless, crass exposure on The View.) Can anyone say for sure what exactly she exposed? Was it the thin sawing or the old Horace Goldin method performed by Thurston, Dante, etc., before the "Thin" Sawing became the standard method? |

After reading this story and watching the media coverage of the current War, I think if you take an HONEST assesment of reporters/journalists, you will find that they will say or do ANYTHING to get a story or push their PERSONAL agendas. Barbara Walters and the whole crew at CNN should go find new careers. They have set a miserable example of objective and responsible reporting/storytelling.
Change the channel when you see this kind of journalism or whatever it is Barbara Wah Wah claims to be doing. Chance Wolf Wolf's magic

Seriously, who doesn't know the secret to this illusion by now anyway? I learned it from an episode of Looney Tunes when I was 6 or 7.

Regardless, it's still a shame to see it blatantly put out there for anyone. I'm sure magicians would have been mad if they had heard about that Looney Tunes Cartoon even (just an example). The fact is that there are quite a few too many people who know the methods to quite a few too many effects out there already, so why add to the list. It's sad really that it's that way, but all we can do now is limit the further exposure of magic and hope to gain some ground back.
Even after the "secrets revealed" shows, I still have friends who perform the sword basket and what-not, not because they think they're fooling everyone, but for the reason of joy and entertainment. The people who know the secret are losing out on a big part of the fun...the mystery. So let them take the loss and us prevail. I may be young, but I'm very passionate about the art.

I've got to go with Marko on this one: Sawing in half has been exposed, in many of its forms, so often now that anyone who has the slightest interest probably knows it. And, over the years, it has been exposed by many, many "name" magicians!
BTW, the sword basket is a little different: You don't have to watch an exposure to figure out how it's done; the method is painfully obvious. The first few times I saw it, I couldn't figure out what the magicians were supposed to be doing; it was so obvious that I figured there had to be more to it and I was just missing it. |

Seems that revealing secrets is the "in" thing these days! And with the Internet, it makes it really hard to keep it from happening. Too many people think they are "cool" when they can tell people how some trick was done. I think its a shame!

I have to disagree with Peter and Marko for once. Little kids are always in awe when they see it for the first time. But then again what little kid is watching The View?

To keep it simple: Barbara Walters should not be revealing any magic tricks on television. She never ceases to annoy and irritate people, and it's just an ongoing mystery why she's been on television this long. That said, please don't bash all journalists—yes, I happen to be one—because that's extremely unfair and disrespectful. There happens to be thousands of good, solid, productive, hard-working, groundbreaking and influential journalists working hard out there, day in and day out. Thanks.

I'd love to see Baa Baa Waa Waa (for you SNL fans) hauled into court for disclosure. Regardless of who knows what! My kids don't, and this type of thing ruins amazement and wonderment for them.

Matt, I was not bashing all journalists. I was bashing/telling the TRUTH about the main group of "journalists" we have been watching in the mainstream media for the past 25 years or so, with Peter Jennings TOPPING the list (man, go back to Canada Peter! It's painfully OBVIOUS you have no LOVE for AMERICA).
Maybe someday you will make the right choice and be lucky enough to join the FOX News team. Fair and BALANCED is what journalism should truly be. Get out there, be honest, find the TRUTH, even if it contradicts your personal views and make a difference and avoid cow-towing with the Alphabet Channels. Good luck bud! Chance

I just wanted to add my opinion onto all of the good writting and comments above. I always am faced with audience members confronting me about the secrets revealed television specials. I am always dead set on my response to all of these. "I am an entertainer, when people come to a magic show it isn't about the secrets but rather the entertainment value. When people come to see a "good" magic show they should expierence the wonderful feeling of, even if for only a short while, leaving reality, and entering a world unlike any other. I acctually went out and bought a sword basket so people would say things to me about it, so that I am faced with these situations where I can define my opinion of the art of magic!
