Hi all,
Just had an inquiry about a performance I'm doing in a month for a 21st birthday party, about the possibility of customising a card effect with perhaps an old baby photo of the birthday person put on a playing card etc. A few things sprang to mind - the 3 Card Monte giveaway often used at tradeshows, a surprise climax card at the end of 3 Card Monte etc. Has anyone got any other suggestions of things that they've performed or seen over the years? |

At a recent lecture by Michael Ammar, he recommended using the "Magician's Insurance Policy" card trick, and using photoshop to put the guest of honor's picture on the policy. He uses a King of Hearts for a male and a Queen for a female, forces the appropriate card, then produces the insurance policy with the VIPs image as the face of the card. I've never tried it yet, but I like the idea and it might be perfect for what you're looking for!

I can't imagine that this sort of thing leads to strong, memorable magic.
The best thing for you to do is what you already do really well and not append an existing effect with a cheesy, tacked-on ending.

...or like natanel said, and, learn an effect that is a birthday type effect. There are tons out there by Doc Eason and Steve Beam just to name a few. Look around!

Casey is right, there are plenty of fine tricks with good personalized give-aways - it's just adding this sort of thing to an existing effect that I believe is poor magic.

Plays out like so: (Red Deck) Spec chooses a card (7 of diamonds). The card is returned to the deck and you ask how old he (she) is turning. "21? - Well let's look at your card". The card is located and now has the number "21" displayed on the back. The face is shown to be normal, and flipped face down. You tell the spectator, "I know this is your card - you're name's written all over it. You now flip the card face-up again to reveal: "Happy Birthday" __Insert name___ [***************] [*****PHOTO*****] [*****HERE******] [***************] [***************] PM for instructions on the general workings and prep.
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

JB Magic HAPPY BIRTHDAY effect is awesome. You could customize the card if you like ... that would play well I think.

I do not see how this effect would work for birthdays because you already know thier birthday if performing the event, right?

Personally I would get 2 old school photos, stick them to 2 blank cards then do 2 card monte.
its suprising enough when the reds turn black but to see pictures of themself would be an added kicker

Try using "Comedy Card Babies" with the birthday person's picture taped on the sheet.

Last night I did a 50th birthday party for a local businessman who owns a few dozen departments stores and a baseball team. I made up an Unshuffled deck with the store name on one side, and Happy 5-0 on the other. People screamed.

The only thing I do for a birthday when I'm strolling is "Clipped". I tell them something like "since this is your birthday, I brought you a birthday card and this is at. We'll leave it right here until later". I place the clipped card on the table and do my entire routine.
At the end, I call attention to the card....have a card selected and proceed with the routine. Clipped is one trick that I find works well with just about every age and it's lot's of fun too!!! |

Walmart makes custom photo cards. $25 Practice a color changing deck routine. Force a card with a regular back. Do a double lift and have them sign the front of a picture faced card (same card face obviously). Lose the card in deck. I would reverse the signed card in the deck, Revealing the photo on the back of the card in a face up spread... Then change the deck to photo backed of the birthday person. Give all the cards to the birthday girl. Up sell the whole thing for an extra $50 - $75 for your time & effort....

Simon Aronson has a few birthday routines on his DVDs. There's also some nice ideas in the of the Semi-Automatic Card Tricks books.
