I am working on an article, and wanted to toss out a few "if you could" scenarios...
if you could suggest only... one book for a beginner, what would it be? and why one effect for a beginner, what would it be? and why one thing NOT to do, or pitfall not to fall into.. and why?

Just my opinion, but I would suggest they either start with Tarbell, The Amateur Magician's Handbook or The Mark Wilson Course in Magic.
Those three books will answer your other questions and give them a great education in magic. Greg

One book for a beginner, what would it be? and why
A Practical Handbook for the Actor by Melissa Et Bruder Publisher Comments: 6 working actors describe their methods and philosophies of the theater. All have worked with playwright David Mamet at the Goodman Theater in Chicago. Cos I like David Mamet and I think it would be a good idea for a beginner to learn act and think about his character before stating to learn any tricks. one effect for a beginner, what would it be? and why Cups and Balls cos when you have mastered it you can call yourself a magician and it teaches so much. one thing NOT to do, or pitfall not to fall into.. and why? Don’t buy a computer cos they are a waist of time and money. Tommy -Amateur-
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Beginner at what? Stage magic? Card magic? It would vary depending on a lot of things.

Thanks all...
Good replies. Summing up one's life history and lessons learned in a few sentences to a newcomer is very difficult... but if you had to impart your years of wisdom on someone new to magic, what would you say?

The thing about so many people starting out, they seem more interested in learning a hat full of secrets. So, I'd probably recommend Bill Tarr's, Now You See It, Now You Don't.
If they stick to magic with any seriousness and their priorities change I'd recommend Burgers, The Experience of Magic.

Interesting choices on initial effects.... I like the idea of the cups and balls - since it teaches many of the sleights, ect...
no one mentioned spongeballs yet - cheap, versatile, and fun.

Ok we have some good advice on books...
what about some effects you would suggest... maybe an area of study... and more importantly, what pitfalls would you warn about?
