I just don't see the point in using IM as a blogging tool...

I've been on for a few weeks... it’s a micro-blogging / social networking thing. I like it. I can enter my thoughts from the web or use my cell (via a text message)... there is a way to do photos but I have not tried (yet). I was introduced to it at a conference at Johns Hopkins APL earlier in the month... during an on-stage debate the moderator displayed her twitter page on a screen behind the participates. Most folks in the audience where commenting and asking questions in real time via her twitter page (most had laptop computers using APL’s Wifi). It was neat to see comments rolling by as the debate raged... I felt like part of the debate rather than just a spectator.
I just saw a tweet (that’s what a twitter entry is called... a tweet) from a conference attendee. She made it from Wifi on a plane jetting out over the ocean (just two hours ago)... Neat way to stay in touch... hey even the Mars Phoenix mission has a twitter page... http://twitter.com/MarsPhoenix

Twitter is great in many ways. Think of it as a bare bones Facebook.
From a purely "keep in touch" way, its nice to know what friends are doing or find out if anyone is nearby to go and do something. Its like sending a text message "blast" to friends. Second, its a great marketing tool when used properly. I am absolutely against using it to spam people. But it is great to give clients an opportunity for an "inside" look into the life of a magician. Think of it: they follow you and get behind-the-scenes info. |

I resisted Twitter for a long time and recently joined. I kind of like it. Several magic people are on it: Garcia, Kenner, the iTricks crew and others.

I'm a proud luddite. I don't blog, twitter or have a facebook page. I have a cell phone but only turn it on when I need to use it. I've never sent a text message nor recieved one.

I'm with you on all that...except FB, it really is very personal and you can zero in on the block you grew up on. I was reluctant but then I see how easy it is to connect with childhood friends...and I like that.

Having no childhood friends nor old classmates I'd really ever wish to see again Facebook holds very little interest to me either I'm afraid

twitter -forcing yourself upon a masochistic, willing group if "friends" you've never met with the inane personal drivel of your life 144 characters at a time... And at a cost of up to .12$ a message (depending upon your cellphone provider!)
What a waste of bandwidth. If individual "Twitters" are called tweets, Are Twitter's users called twits? Just curious...

Here are my thoughts on how I use twitter. Completely personal of course, I wouldn't dream of suggesting that everyone's experience would be the same or that there is some general stereotype that uses it. That would be a bit like suggesting that everyone that uses email is a geek (which is what many people did suggest when it was first developed and then it was partly true I guess, not anymore though
I use twitter in two ways. Firstly there is a professional way I use it. I work a lot with media production companies and broadcasters in my corporate work and many of the people who are useful to know in that industry now twitter. I follow them and pay attention to things that they write about companies and technologies that are important to them. Occasionally I join in with these conversations both because I'm interested and, slightly, as a way of keeping myself visible to these clients and potential clients. Secondly, I follow friends and they follow me. We mention stuff we are doing, reading, researching, messing with etc and occasionally "proper" conversations start. But even when they don't there is a playful feeling to the fact that we know what each other is up to. As I spend a lot of my work time alone (researching, practicing, rehearsing) this daft little bit of contact with my friends is a nice thing. The character limit to twitter works in an interesting way here. It stops people going on to much and keeps the chat light. Of course, if we get into something more important we use email or phone each other. This kind of use will only appeal to those who have a playful disposition towards new technology of course. Here's something else to consider. I was talking to Paul Daniels about twitter last Friday night and he thinks its good for promotion. You twitter about an upcoming show and get a boost of ticket sales. Only works if you have a name of course. There is certainly a lot of inane nonsense on twitter as gaddy rightly suggests but perhaps that's one of the reasons why people who do it like it? Its light and friendly and a bit silly whereas email generally feels like work nowadays. I like a quick dose of pointless contact with people I know after a few hours of intense solitary work, just as later that day I may I get the urge to go to the pub with some of them. I wouldn't spend money to use Twitter so I only do it from home. And I don't follow celebrities cos they suck. ;-) S

I'm a newbie to Twitter but I'm quite enjoying it. Don't quite see the full point of it yet. I'm at http://www.twitter.com/ComedyHypnoRT.
No one really seems to talk about blogs though. I personally feel that the impact they can have on a business can be astronomical. I remember when blogs first came around, I didn't have a CLUE on how to go about setting one up.. or even what it is! Now I have a blog running at http://www.ComedyHypnosis.co.uk/Blog.html but I sussed that a good blog really will work for ANY business. Even if you don't think you're funny or interesting! A blog helps to build a relationship of trust and respect between you and your clients/potential clients. It puts you as a perceived expert in any given field. The best bit about blogs? They're free!!! And you can make them look as funky and cool as you want. I'm not an expert-blogger but I'm rapidly becoming fairly knowledgable. My blog was NOT designed to entertain hypnotists, but rather the normal public and my clients/potential clients but I seem to get a bunch of e-mails from hypnotists who are enjoying the blog posts too. Anyway... the point of this. It was one of my best friends and colleagues who introduced me to the world of blogging. Many of you will know of him or know him personally and he's a genius with THOUSANDS of blogreaders. Best bit is, he's teaching all about blogging for magicians (and entertainers generally) in this fantastic new eBook and how to really boost business with it. I would recommend it for anyone and I would actually go as far as to say that it is, without doubt, one of the best 2 books I've read in the last few years. No question. All killer material with no filler. Anyway. Just an honest and straight forward recommendation. Please do yourself a favour and take a lookey at: http://tinyurl.com/cafubg It's genius! Cheers, RT |
