Hey folks,
So I haven't done the hot rod in about ten years, I've stuck to my money paddle and my knives but I've recently come up with a great bit that I think would work really well in my show with a hot rod and I need to pick one up. I remember how cheap the wooden ones I used to have were with the stones always falling off and the metal ones won't work for what I need. So I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place I could buy a really well made wooden hot rod with real looking gems that won't constantly fall out. I don't mind paying for something well made, as long as it's just that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Eddie

I like the jumbo ones better http://www.etrickshop.com/General_Magic-......ces.html I also like the clear "see thru" ones the best.

Yep, he did request the wooden one, and you showed him a link. But guess what...I still like the jumbo clear ones better.

I really like Zingg's Divining Rod. Gordon Meyer gave it a review on My Lovely Assistant which is what sold me on trying it out.

Proably wrong for the OP but Precision magics are beautiful. Large stones set above the surface; but the rod is metal.

I strongly second Rich Hill! Rich is a great guy to do business with. He custom made my jumping gems out of hard wood and Swarovski crystals (if you want "real" definitely the way to go). But his standard sets are better than most. I've used both more than any other prop I've owned, and have never lost a stone.

Thanks folks,
I'm going to give a few of these a shot. Those Swarovski crystals sound awesome, I'm definitly going to look into that. Eddie

I agree on the Zingg rod. After seeing one of these up close, they are a work of beauty. The stones look like gems that should be in jewelry and the wood is very exotic looking.

The other thing you may want to consider is getting a wood craftsman in the area to make you a few - the kind of guys that make the wooden crafts - they can put out some beautiful work and you can customize it to your liking.

I did a set for a customer in Chicago. The sticks were Gabon Black Ebony and consisted of real red rubys on one side and an array of geniune saphires on the other. I almost wanted to just refund him and keep them

Jake, were they mirror back gems? I can't imagine them shining if they weren't.

I was hoping someone knew of something like that. In any case, I've ordered the Divining rod and I'm going to be putting in an order for the Rich Hill one, I'm sure they'll be awesome Eddie.

Would that this were true. However, when a supplier puts the time and money into something of that nature, he almost has to be certain that he won't have to sit on it too long before he sells it.
Timing is important, too. One reason I left the publishing business was that the county and city tax people decided to go after small businessmen. If I had a group of cartons of books in the warehouse on Jan. 1, I had to pay tax on them. If you have a slow-moving item, then you have to pay tax on it.

Really? They taxed you on stuff you hadn't moved? I would've thought it'd be the complete opposite. You've got to love the political climate, huh? Assuming this is a rather new set of laws, that is.

It's not a new set of laws. It's just that they never bothered to apply them to small businesses, that is, people who work out of their homes. I also had to collect sales tax, which is normal, and had other hassles to deal with.
I'm glad they didn't start enforcing this four years earlier, or I would have had to pay taxes on all my props, books, illusions, etc., that I used in my shows. Retirement had its advantages!

The sticks were prepared with the tapered recess then, tripoli polished and then jeweler rouge which gave the gem a mirror background. No where near that as silver, but still provided enough reflection and contrast to make the gems appealing. The gemstones were then surface buffed. While the brillance of the stones could have been brighter had we used silver in the resting spots, the customer was happy with the over all color of the gems against the Black Ebony. Jake
