Does anyone know the details on how to execute the proper release to hook a bowling ball? This has been my quest for a couple of weeks now.
Looking for some professional tips. Homer |

Hey Homer,
I'll tackle this one. To throw a hook with a house ball is nearly impossible. If you want to be a proper bowler the first thing to do is get your own ball and get it fitted for your hand. If you want to throw a hook it's most likely going to be drilled for tips, meaning your middle and ring finger will just go into the first knuckle so just the "tip" is in the ball, the thumb will go all the way. Lastly the best advice I got was it was like throwing a football underhand. If you can grip a nerf football and throw it underhand with a spiral, that's the proper release. I think the best bowler to watch to see the best form would be Walter Ray Williams, Jr. He's won many awards for both bowing and horseshoes. Hope that helps... Pete Yes... I bowl...

Hi Pete,
I have a fitted ball for fingertips. I heard about the underhanded toss comparison. Thanks for the advice. Does that mean the release motion is an upward movement of the hand, which imparts right to left spin and therefore a hook? Homer |

You said you have a ball drilled for fingertip release. What kind of ball is it? If it's plastic, that won't really get the job done. There are dozens of decent reactive resin balls that can help you get a good hook. A good first "hook" ball for a beginner would be something like a Brunswick Groove.
My mother owned a bowling alley when I was a kid. I can't throw a football straight if my life depended on it, but I do have 2 300 games, 1 299 a few months ago in a Jr./Adult tournament, and I am the current WMS bowling champion. (Yeah, I won a major award at the world magic seminar, but it happened to be for bowling, not magic.) |

Hey Homer,
Yes. You want the ball to rotate right to left, bet not just straight right to left. If you were to look down at the ball should be spinning from 4:30 - 10:30. At least that's what mine does, Everybody has their own release. Some people throw a huge hook so for their approach instead of keeping hips and shoulders toward the target they'll have a big shoulder turn so they can bring the ball farther back and impart more spin. I bowl more like Walter Ray to where I start on the second arrow and try to just get it to hook enough to hit the pocket. As for an upward movement, I would call it a big upward movement, it's more like letting the ball "fall" off the hand as you pull the hand from below. That will give it good enough spin to where it will turn and see the pocket. When you start pulling up and cranking the ball more hook comes in and your misses will be bigger leaving you with less carry and more splits. This video has a pretty simple, but pretty good idea of release. http://www.bowling200.com/bowlingvideos/release.html Also, the video on the site about how balls hook is worth looking into, it's a clip from Modern Marvels. Hope that helps. Pete

Hi Pepka,
I have some kind of reactive resin ball. The name on it is Dark Thunder. It is starting to hook about a ball width now that I am starting to understand the release. Thanks, Homer |

How cool would it be if my bowling average went up 40 pins because of help from the Magic Café?
Priceless! Thanks everybody. Homer |

Pete,
You cleared up many questions and the video link tells me everything else. Thank you so much and I'll give it some practice this week. Telling me the direction of the spin helps me a lot. Thanks also Pepka. Thanks! Homer |

Falling off the hand is definitely the best way to describe it...letting gravity do the work (akin to the coin falling in the Himber melt vanish!).
Great effort and throwing hard is NOT necessary; again, gravity, as a result of the backswing, is most of it. In fact, a moderate speed (watch the pros) allows the ball to travel straight at first, and then only at the end, take hold with the spin, curving into the pocket between the first and third pin. |

I just give the Wii remote a good counter clock wise twist on the upswing.

Hey Pete,
I have any bowling match to record on my TiVo and the one I'm watching now happens to be Walter Ray Jr. He is great to watch as you mentioned. Homer |

Yeah, Walter Ray is probably the best today. When I was a kid I was all about Mark Roth. He was a complete opposite, a real power player. Homer, if you wanna see something cool check this out...

Homer,
Glad you got something from it! He was the one I tried to emulate when I first started. He just keeps everything simple and there's nothing real flashy. Good luck! Pete
