A class act all the way to the end. Cool Hand Luke is a classic, and Doc Hudson is my favorite character in Cars.
Plus, he raised over $200,000,000 for his charity: "In 1982, Newman and his friend A.E. Hotchner founded Newman's Own, a food company that produced food ranging from pasta sauces to salad dressing to chocolate chip cookies. "The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films," Newman once wryly noted. To date, the company -- which donates all profits to charities such as Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang camps -- has given away more than $200 million. Newman established the camp to benefit gravely ill children. "He saw the camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back and raise a little hell," Forrester said.

He was a good guy. A humble actor. His company produced top notch products for a top notch cause.

A great actor and good guy. Anybody catch the movie Nobody's Fool? Wow, the beauty of appearing to be doing absolutely no "acting."

Paul didn't want his picture on the dressing. But it was explained to him that was going to be the draw, so he gave in.
He was as generous and caring as he was talented. The planet is a better place because of him. He's in Heaven, play'in it cool!

Paul is one of the reason's I became a magician. I was 12 when I saw "The Sting" and even though it was John Scarne really dealing the seconds, I was still hooked from that point on.
Another favorite Newman reference: I may not have been blessed with a great physique or head of hair, but I do have two beautiful bright blue eyes. (Au natural.) When I was very young, like 5 or 6, my mom's friends would tell her I had Paul Newman's eyes. She would almost swoon and say, "Oh dear Lord, if only he got them from Paul Newman!" R.I.P. Paul. You were the classiest guy left in Hollywood and a real man's man. You are sorely missed. |

I loved "Hud" because he did not care one iota.

Pepka, I'm with you on the sting thing. I can remember sitting down with some cards trying to figure that out, like if I shuffled enough I would just come to me.
from "butch cassidy", "color of money" " the verdict", he was a great actor, and he defined Class. neman/cassidy- "what happened to the old bank? It was beautiful." guard- "people kept robbing it." newman- "small price to pay for beauty."

A sign famously hangs in Paul Newman's Westport, Conn., offices that reads, "If I had a plan I would be screwed." Paul Newman believed in the benefit of "creative chaos," where, as in a movie set, different people offer ideas about how a scene should be handled.
That was Paul's enduring philosophy, and it worked. It was part of Paul saying everybody had a voice.

I read some great stuff about him today: He didn't go to award shows any more, he thought that stuff was a waste of time (said he didn't even own a tux.). He was once given an invitation to come to the white house for a medal, but he declined. he really felt his work should go unnoticed.
His work with kids, at the "Hold In The Wall" was the greatest. kevin

I saw the news on the "TV Guide" channel and the coverage was pathetic. I don't think one of those idiot talking heads had ever seen one of his movies. All they kept mentioning was "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and "The Color of Money". Probably because they saw on IMDB that that's the one he got an Oscar for. No mention of "Cool Hand Luke", "The Hustler" "Hud", "The Verdict" "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof", "The Life and Times Of Judge Roy Bean" (forget about a movie like "Sometimes a Great Notion") until a couple of hours later when they could get the info up on the tele-prompters.
Then these morons were all asking each other "What made him so special, why will he be remembered?" and the consensus was, his acting yes, but especially his charity work. Bullcrap!!! Bullcrap!! His charity work was incredible, but this guy was a singular actor. One of the greatest actors of his, or any generation. He was an incredible performer and screen presence. That's what made him an icon. He was one of the all time greats, one of the very best. If he had never donated a dime to charity, he would still be an icon and a superstar. He was talent and class personified. P.S. "TV Guide" stick to the lightweight crap reality shows and makeovers and red carpet reviews. Your "talent" is pathetic when it comes to talking about real stars and true Hollywood legends. Lame *** !@#$%^&s. P.P.S Typically TCM devotes several nights to a legendary actor when they pass on. I'm looking forward to watching several of his films in the upcoming days, and remembering just how great Newman was. His greatness as an actor had nothing to do with salad dressing.

This is sort of a strange observation, but I've noticed that many of my favorite sites have honored Paul Newman with puzzles in his honor. Check this out:
