I ran across this when reading about Paul Newman's death, on his reason for starting the Hole In the Wall camps:
"He saw the camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back and raise a little hell" and I got to thinking that today's kids don't seem to have the freedom we did to raise a little hell during their childhoods. I remember getting into all sorts of "trouble" as a kid. One time a bunch of us were driving around, throwing firecrackers out the car windows (firecrackers were illegal at the time.) When we finally got caught (police pulled us over) they simply confiscated them and sent us on our way. In today's culture I don't know if they would do the same thing. I was in no way a delinquent, but some of the things I did back then would get someone labeled a criminal or, even worse, a terr'ist, in these modern times. Any thoughts? Are our kids missing out on the chance to raise a little hell?

The Nanny State knows what's good for us Slartibartfast, whether it's good for us - or not.
Here the kiddies are taught all about the evils of discrimination, prejudice and judgemental words about other people. God forbid the littlies think they like one person and not another. So are schoolyards now full of sweetness and light and an abundance of love for your fellow kiddie? No. Bullying is at an all time high and there's rarely a week without something on the news about it. About the same success as all the healthy eating and lifestyle we are encouraged to. Great success there - more and heavier fat people in the Western world than ever before. My favourite example is nightclubs - once full of sleazy people, getting rotten drunk, smoking cigarettes, loving and fighting and letting off steam. Now our clubs are not allowed to have any intoxicated people on their premises, smoking is banned, criminals are kept out of the management, and there's more trouble than ever before. Yet rather than understand you cannot legislate a perfect world and loosen the apron strings, our politicians see every little incident as excuse to make even more of their silly ineffective laws which I'll swear drive people to more troublesome alternatives. Now that I wear an older man's shoes I'm glad kids don't do what I did.
As a kid from the city projects it was easy to hook up with the wrong crowd(s), raise all kinds of hell and do things I wouldn't think of doing today. Despite the benefits of boy's clubs, CYOs, soda shops, park recreation, sports organizations we managed to find trouble. Today's kids still raise hell. There are still drugs and alcohol to inspire. Nowadays they don't fist fight but just blow rivals away. Not much different IMO. |

I was not a problem child; I was the 'golden boy.'
As a teen ,though, I was the anarchistic class clown, and questioner of authority and social conventions.

I wish that the Nanny State would study History. Making something illegal doesn't eliminate it. It just forces it underground.
Further regarding the Nanny State: Quote:
In the name of motherhood and fatherhood and education and good manners, we threaten and suffocate and bind and ensnare and bribe and trick children into wholesale emulation of our ways. As a teacher, I remind myself daily that this is not my goal. I don't believe in brainwashing. I believe in teaching them the skills I have that have made me confident and happy with myself. Was I a troublemaker when I was a kid? Oh, yeah. You have no idea. And some things never change.
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Oh boy was I ever, Big time. I was really good at inspiring other kids to screw up, and as such, I seldom got in trouble myself.

Yes I was a troublemaker coming up. I would have been worse but was sent to organized religion school. As an adult I tried to be like everybody else and made mistakes and did not learn from them.
Now I realize what living like its your last day is all about. Amazing as it is,I get along very well with awake, aware, enlightened nonconformists. Sure am glad I discovered the citizens of the Café. Thought Farmer. P.S. Give yourself a hand if you were or are a troublemaker right now! |

Can't let Thought Farmer kill the thread by his mere presence.
What about some actual incidents? Ironically I got caned in Year 7 for organising a sweet innocent hetero game of Catch and Kiss. Imagine where that would rate on the scale of childhood misdemeanour now. Not really up there with drug dealing and taking weapons to school. Destiny |

I was a rogue, we found every abandoned, pigeon $H1t infested building in the area, these included a hospital, an asylum, a brewery, a whole milk depot, An old Abbey, we had fields and a forest which was called the Devils slide, which we would play in and set fire to regularly. We smashed out most of the windows and threw most of the slate off the roofs like frisbees in the above places, most of which had just been left with everything in them. We would have regular stone fights with kids we would shout names at and get chased by.
We lived near a canal which was another hangout, we would often play alongside it and go for long adventures on our bikes. We were allowed to camp in the garden during the summer where we snuck out and got into lots of trouble. I loosened the front wheel of a fellow kids bike and the wheel came off causing a faceplant. LOL he contacted me not 2 weeks ago on Facebook asking if I remembered him... Ouch!!! I lived on the same street as the town hospital and they built an extension, this was when we were going through our Ninja phase. So we would climb around and explore the new, massive, extension and one day we found a tunnel that lead under the old hospital it lead into a long tunnel that contained file cabinets, old equipment and stuff, 100's of storage rooms. This tunnel led upto the first underground floor of the hospital, we would sneak about undetected. We would also climb up onto the roof of the hospital and Ninja stealth about spying through windows and tracking people. Trying to sneak into parts we had never explored. It was usually me, my Brother and my old best friend. All this was accessible every day after school and during the summer. We were free as birds. This was all before high school, and much has been omitted, need I continue? It gets much, much worse, BELIEVE...

Here is a couple from the early years. Grade 8 school play, brought one of my Dad's tobacco pipes in and smoked it on stage ---briefly.
Senior year in high school got all liquored up on a field trip. Would have made it but I overindulged and had the urge to recycle the liquor out the same hole it went in. Strangely enough, nobody believed it was the flu. Adult stuff, sorry the statue of limitations on the most recent stuff is still active. Thanks for the laughs all you fantastic non-conformists. Thought Farmer. Oohhh I see the magic number 50 in my future. |
