I know there's an 'Up in Smoke' section, but it's been really quiet over there. I'm wondering about magic using Zippo lighters. I like the idea of using magic with a small flame, but I'm not sure where to go to learn any effects. Someone had mentioned the DVD "50 Ways to Rock a Lighter", but in reading the reviews it seemed like those weren't really magic effects, more like stunts. Has anyone seen the DVD? Is it worth it? Magical? Not?
My Zippo would really liked to be used... |

"50 ways" is primarily a flourish instructional dvd. As with any flourish it may enhance your performance or detract from it depending on your style. If you don't know any Zippo flourishes it is worth having, but it is mainly a compilation of material that was previously on the web. There are hundreds of Zippo flourishes out there. They can be found by search engine, youtube, etc.
As far as actual tricks with Zippos, Collectors Workshop has a ring in Zippo effect. I put out a self lighting cigarette effect in conjunction with Vito Lupo called Zanzibar Zippo. You could buy it from Vito or myself when we lectured but that was over 5 years ago. One pops up for sale every once in awhile if you keep your eyes open. |

Here's a few ideas:
A Zippo production ala Jack Chanin (as described in the Tarbell Course). A penetration through a hanky, similar to what is performed with a golf ball. A Miser's Dream with Zippos. A Zombie Zippo. Vanishing Zippo, similar to the birdcage vanish. Color changing Zippo. The foundation books in the art of magic have so many ideas that can be adapted to a lighter. If you can do it with another object, try to figure out a way to do it with a lighter. |

Is that what is taught on the "50 Ways..." DVD? There's also an effect where you wave your fingers up in the direction the flame is going and it slowly moves up from the lighter until it extinguishes itself. It looks like the flame is rising and getting smaller and smaller until it goes out. I really like the way these effects look. So would you suggest getting that DVD then? I'm not really into the moves where you're flipping the lighter around like a shot glass; I like the more simple looking ones where you manipulate the flame itself. What do you think? Thanks again to everyone for their ideas! |

AHaha... I learned that one from a guy in boy scouts. It's very simple, but when used right, as with all tricks, it's very good.

SilverFox, when you want to take it deeper, you might want to purchase Bic lighters and a DVD or book on cigarette/cigar manipulation. You will able to manipulate the Bic lighters like cigarettes/cigars. That can make a great act.

I tried to hold still and figure out what I was doing to make it happen, but it didn't work. I couldn't get it to do it again! UGH!!! Thanks Dynamike for the tip about the Bic lighters too!! |

There used to be an old Zippo trick in which a small portion of wick was able to be lifted out of the main Zippo body. It was on a piece of wire stretched between the wick cage. This allowed the magician the ability to pick up the flame and then place it back onto the lighter.

You can find all kinds of manipulation techniques on zippos that you could maybe from into a trick. Youtube is the big one. Keep in mind that some are better than others.

SillverFoxx,
Sent you a PM with the method I know for the flame trick. While not really a hard trick, and tons upon tons of people know it, I'm against methods in open forums. Danton

I purchased the DVD 50 Ways To Rock A Lighter 2-2-09. But the magic shop is stalling with my purchase.
