Game 8 and Anand comes up with another TN. Kramnik's seconds must be getting shouted at a lot...
Vienna is a sharp variation to play when you only need draws, but Anand's strategy of heading for tactical positions as black has worked a treat. Only 1 more point needed - a win, or 2 draws you think?

Even Bobby effectively backed into the title, but I'd like to see him keep it up. I think it's a good idea to stick with what's working, too. Besides, the best way to get a draw if you really want one is to get a winning position, then offer one.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

Anand has been in superb form. He really has had very little danger in any of the games. I hope he continues to play sharp lines. And, Nosher, I'm with you: I'd hate to be one of Kramnik's seconds right now.

Kramnik must be devastated. He finally got the sort of position he relishes and he just missed the winning continuation. Ouch! But the match remains exciting.

OK, Kramnik finally draws blood in game 10. But I have a question - I played through the game and cannot find the reason Anand would need to resign. Now, Kramnik had the advantage to be sure, but I did not see the win coming.
The article said Anand was in time trouble. Was it perhaps that Anand knew that, even if he could hold on for awhile without losing, the game would go on longer than he had time - and that being he had a disadvantage at the board he did the professional thing and resigned?

I'm at work and I don't have a board, but IM Malcolm Pein at The Week in Chess gives
"The threats are Re7 and Qb7 they can't both be prevented, what a nice game by Kramnik, he got his kind of position and played it beautifully [29.Qd6 Bf7 30.Qb4 with the simple plan of a6 and taking on a7 with total control; 29.Qd6 Rd8 30.Qb4 Rab8 31.a6 when Black can hardly move and a7 falls]" John

Nice win for Kramnik. Will he come back all the way? He might be a VK, but I don't think he's that VK...

Just saw 12...exf5. Tripled pawns and give your opponent a fantastic square on d5?
Looks crazy to me, but then again he's Kramnik and I'm not...

I've been offline for a few days and sick with a cold. Still under the weather but back. Congrats to the Anand supporters.

Welcome back. Kramnik's game 10 performance should have cheered you somewhat; it was a beautiful game.

It was a great game but after the past few days I have to say I think Anand is a worthy Champion. The games he played were great.

And unlike John, Anand did take Kramnik's pants down in public and spanked him good. Three times in a row.
Sorceress, We have exchanged PMs and chatted a little but hijacking a thread about the world chess championships is really unnecesary. I don't get it. |
