Good evening, magicians!
After having browsed the forums for a few months, I've now decided the time was right to make myself an account and dive into this wonderful world. My name is William. I have been interested, and awed by magic, my whole life. Only recently though, have I begun exploring and practicing myself, and I consider it to be one of my better decisions in life. My fascination and excitement grows every day, and I hope I will be able to keep this feeling for a long time to come. So far, I have taken my first steps in card and coin conjuring, mainly with the coins, exploring Bobos book (completely amazing...). I had the privilige of attending a smaller scale convention the past weekend as well, where I made an investment and purchased a set of cups and balls, deciding that this is one of the first things I wish to study as well. The hours since, have seemed very short - the time flies when I practice. =) Anyway... I am 19 years old, and I live in southern Sweden (hence the "good evening"). I went to a performing arts highschool (music being another passion of mine), and studied one year at the academy of music in Malmo. From there I have now been granted a few years leave, since I will be doing my military service (yes, that's the swedish style) starting January 2009. In the mean time, I am taking a university course in peace and conflict science, and filling the rest of my time with driving lessons, but most importantly - magic. I am truly happy to be here, and I look forward to speaking to you! All the best, William |

That would, in a way, actually be completely worth the consequences. I will have to look in to it... Thanks again, nice to hear from you! =)

Hiya William,
Welcome to the Café. Not sure what kind of magic you're into yet but if you decide to explore the storytelling and fantasy side of the art, pop into the spooky and once upon a time forums. I think you'll like it here. Simon |

I am not completely sure yet, but so far, I am more interested in sleight of hand, than advanced gimmicks and grand illusions. I've started out trying to create my own form of a one coin routine, as well as trying to build a foundation with the cups. What sort of magic do you prefer? =)
Simon - thank you, I will certainly take a look. The possibilities of mysterious/poetic/story-like presentations really appeal to me, and I think that's the sort of style I would like to aim for, eventually. ...and I am convinced I will like it here. William |

Welcome aboard!
I've become thoroughly convinced that if you can't find it here...you'll find it nowhere! By the way, what is the length of service that is required, or should I say demanded, in Sweden? ~gaffed~

Thank you, sir!
One generation back, every man in Sweden served in the military through general conscription. Since then though, more or less everything has been cut back in one way or another, and the swedish military now is more geared toward international efforts, rather than being able to stand against a classic style invasion of the country. What happens is that you first get to fill out a health report, and based on this it is decided who will be called in for tests. Due to the cutbacks in the military budget, very few are actually tested. There are different views on all this - some think it is ridiculous to downsize the military in the way that's been done - those who'd rather not serve are quite happy with the fact that you can feign more or less any illness in the health report, and never hear from them again. The positive side is of course that only the most motivated actually serve, in the end. The standard training is 11-15 months depending on your position, and after that you can apply for another 6-12 months, with training geared toward international efforts. Long answer to a short question, perhaps =) Sorry about that! |
