OK, I hope this is the correct forum for this.
I did a search on this but didn’t seem to come up with the answer I was looking for. Years ago I came across a trick which was “Straw Thru Card”. No, it wasn’t by any stretch of the imagination a great trick but just one of those crazy things that pops into one’s mind every now and then and bugs the hell out of you until you get the answer. It was somewhat the same premise as the Cig. Thru card and the card could be signed although with this you could make all of the gimmicked cards you wanted yourself. This was nice simply because as most of us know, the gimmicked cig. thru card eventually wears out and this was just fine by me as years ago I used to make the cig thru card so I was quite happy! It also used two short lengths of a straw. One of the straws was gimmicked (which could also be easily made) and the other not. It was the old thing that since you removed the straw from your pocket you then had every reason to return it there only to then remove the un-gaffed straw and casually place it on the table for inspection. The thing about this trick was that after you placed the straw thru the card you would then have the spectator look through the end of the straw and the card could be seen. In other words, it simply looked as if only the perimeter of the straw went through the card and not simply a hole. OK…here is my question. Does anyone know who the magician was that came up with this trick as for the life of me I can’t remember his name? The name Petrick keeps coming to mind but I’m not all that sure. ~gaffed~

I believe you are correct and that it is Petrick as in Petrick and Mia. Around the same time, early 80's, he also had his Linking Razor Blades for sale.

The effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not.......

Ah yes...I had forgotten about Mia. Just for some reason the name of Petrick stuck in my mind. It's been a long time but I don't recall getting all that much into their magic. Like said, the "Straw Through Card" wasn't really all that great as I didn't like the idea of the gimmicked straw/switching/angles and on so on.
Just one of those crazy things that for some reason popped into my mind and was bugging me as to who came out with it. As for linking razor blades and such like effects I'm not even sure if such razor blades are even made anymore? Might very well be wrong on that since I haven't used them for well over 30 plus years. Thanks..... ~gaffed~

I've actually got a set of the linking blades stuck away somewhere..."Don't Blink...Blades Link"...was a slogan on the package I believe. The first magic lecture I attended was Petrick and Mia at Micky Hades in Seattle. His lecture notes contained some interesting magic, often with interesting routines and thinking. I remember he amazed me with a number of his creations. His selected card through deck in particular stands out as frying me at the time. I'll have to pull the notes out and take a fresh look at them.

I know Petrick came out with this. I think Lubor Fiedler may have had a version as well.

(Old topic, I know...)
I was working at a magic shop when Straw Thru Card came out and when I read the description I thought it sounded too good to be true. So before we got it in stock I started playing with straws and cards and after a day or so... ...I figured it out! I was so proud of myself. (Hey, I was young.) Then we got the actual trick into the shop, and what do you know, the method was different! And, of course, I always thought my method was better/cleaner. =:) Jay Jennings
