SKS silk was woven in Japan. About four years ago, 2 or 3 of the remaining silk mills in Japan closed. The remaining one or ones ( I forget) bought their silk coccoons from China.
I agree the momme is not the only deciding factor. But it is a good starting point. The weave and style of the silk is also a large factor. I am baseing my observations on the same style and weave of silk in different momme weights. I am not an expert on the various weaves of silk. I know what works and that is what I stick with. I am not saying there is anything particularly wrong with 5 momme silks. I just do not feel they do the job as well in the long run. As for hemming when I first starting making silks ( about 1985), I went to the Kent State Fashion museum and asked international known designer Shannon Rogers how to hem silks. His reply was to "find some old nuns". It was almost unheard of in this country to have anyone who knew how to hem silks. The hemmer foots are ok for straight stitching but they do not solve how to do the corners. It is a tedious and relatively long learning curve to learn how to do. JNeal's description is pretty much right on. Most of it is a feel thing as to how to roll the silks. BTW, I am using a 1930 White sewing machine that my great uncle paid $125 in 1930. It does not even have reverse on it. But it does work. The quality silk from China has been available for at least 30 years. There was a time that it was harder to get because of the trade sanctions with China. But that is not the case anymore. You are not going to find it at the local Jo Ann fabric store but it available. I have seen some of the garabage silk weaves you are talking about. Maybe I am behind the curve a bit. Horace Marshall made silks for every top pro in the world..Blackstone, Calvert, Birch, Sorcar, Kalang and many others. I am using the same type of silk he used. If it ain't broke don't fix it. I will conceed that as far a commercially available hemming goes what is available now is much better than 30 years ago. BTW, there is no fight here. We simply are agreeing to disagree based on our personal experiences. Richard

Richard,
I agree, there is no fight here. There is just a fear that lay people will assign clout where there is no authority. Nothing even comes close to visual inspections for reliability when it comes to the silk we use in magic. Buyers must depend on the integrity of the sellers. Unfortunately, that is an expensive lesson in the market place. I think we are all after the same result. We want our magicians to have a reason to rely on quality vendors. We are not here to bash or defend the others. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Agreed. You have to see the product and ultimately use it to see if it does the job for you.
Momme weight by itself will not indicated the quality of the silk or its manufacture. I have said Bob's Dovelite silks are a good quality as I have said about P&A, Rices, Abbott's and several others. If you deal with a reputable manufacturer or dealer, you will get a good product. But the ultimate test of mine or anyone's product is does it work for you and suit your needs. Richard

Well Gentleman,
Since we are all in accord about seeking out the best quality (regardless of weight) and we all agree that good quality can be now had in any weight, it really comes down to personal preference as to which material we choose to use, for what purpose. I've had Abbott, SKS, Richard Hughes and many other brands of 'silks' and made hundreds of my own...and I look forward to getting my hands on some of Bob's quality 5 momme items in the near future. Although 90% of what I use is 8 or 10 wt. silk, I still have one effect that requires something much lighter and I 'm sure his products...do the trick! I am sure that the non posting members who are reading this thread will have benefited from the lively discussion and see that here in the 'little world of hankies" , we are as passionate as any group of finger flingers and cardicians!

I think instead of hugging we should do a coordinated Blendo or Duke's Dye-Version while singing "We are the World (of Scarves)"
If Marlo and Vernon could only have gotten along so well!

Enjoyed the thread. Even in disagreement, much to be learned. Thank you gentlemen.

Lace the solder into the tube. One of the nice things about solder is that it is soft and can be shaped as needed! This makes cheap "Bang" gun silks roll out better too. Scheme! Bob, Jonathan, and Richard;
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this discussion between three guys I respect tremendously. It was like sitting at a table at a convention and just listening. Boy did I learn a lot and relish the experience and lessons I learned. You just can't get this stuff from the books you read. Great discussion. This is what the Magic Café is all about. Gentlemen,well done. I salute you. David Williams |

Thanks David /Darkwing!
For such a nice compliment, you get to pick the next subject in the silk arena and I'm sure all interested parties will give it 'the round table ' treatment!
