I posted this in Latest & Greatest, but thought I'd drop it in here too. L&L just released a new set of DVDs from Dr. Sawa.

The Doctor ls ln!
The NEW Coin Magic of Dr. Sawa Produced by L&L Publishing — Hosted by Max Maven When Dr. Sawa burst onto the magic scene back in the 1970s, he caused an international sensation. His work with paper, seashells, ropes and especially coins, was simultaneously whimsical and astonishing. Some years ago, for private reasons, Dr. Sawa vanished from the magic world. Happily, he has resurfaced—his enthusiasm for magic not only renewed, but actually increased. L&L Publishing is proud to present this multiple-DVD set, containing almost fifty new and astonishing coin routines on a total of six DVDs. The Professor, Dai Vernon, summed up Dr. Sawa this way: “One of the most creative magicians I have ever known. As the saying goes, you have to see it to believe it—and even then, you won’t!” 6 DVD Set - $180.00 Individual Volumes - $34.95 each There are 8 effects on each DVD with a whopping total of 48 effects on all DVD's.

I purchased Dr. Sawa book from Kaufman when it came out , as well as the Greater Magic video from Steven's.
His material is excellent, although some of it is quite challenging. I'm looking forward to exploring this new set of DVD's. He has some very imaginative effects that use interesting props.

Finally!!
I was one of the people on whom the good doctor used to practice his English presentation before making the DVDs, and let me tell you that his routines are killers!! Innovative, entertaining, and mind boggling (not to mention fun!). Also, he's one of the nicest guys that I have ever met in magic. I only wish he also practiced his English explanations on me as well -- still, I was going to get the set anyway, so I'll find out the methods as soon as it takes to ship the disks over here. His patter's timing and jokes are a sharper in Japanese than they are in English due to his unfamiliarity with the language (not much use for it way out in the suburbs of Gifu). But all magicians eventually supply their own timing and jokes to any new routine anyway. Still, if the preview (and my own experience) are any indication, his performance on the DVDs will be quite charming, and his magic moves don't suffer from any language barrier. I'm hoping he'll do a DVD of sea-shell magic next. (No, I don't have any inside info -- just a wild hope). I'm very happy this is out! Bill |

This shoot was a killer! The magic is mindboggling. At one point I was sitting there thinking, "OK I know how one could get 8 coins from a 4 coin box but where the heck did the other coins come from." This is very creative, totally new material.
His jumbo productions were absolutely killer live. I hope they came across the same on film. |

Question: Do you have to be sitting for the majority of these routines?
Thx! |

If I recall correctly Dr. Sawa was.

During his demonstration for us, he was sitting most of the time, and for a few effects, he was standing behind the table. But nearly all of them took place in front of a close-up mat on a table. I don't remember any effects that were especially designed for stand-up/stage. (But if I recall correctly, there are more effects on the DVD than were demonstrated for us.)

I haven't looked at any of the videos, but it appears that most, if not all, of his material is with him seated at a table, based on the still shots I've seen. Is this the case or can the routines be performed in a strolling situation. I might pick these up for general amusement, but as somebody who strolls most of the time, I'm wondering about this. Thanks.

Perhaps that's the major concern to most of us, whether the routines HAS to be done sitting down.
If not lapping required then I will want this set bob

Has anyone ordered this set? There's 6 DVD's, so I imagine there has to be some good stuff on there.

I just reviewed the first DVD:
http://magic.about.com/od/magicianwebpages/fr/112208sawa.htm There's some great material and those serious about coins will obtain some powerful ideas. On the other hand, there are serious gimmicks needed and many of the routines do require you to be seated (ala Slydini). -Wayne
