Just returned from a medical convention in Vegas - conference by day, magic by night. A quick review:
Monday night: Penn/Teller (Rio) - A beautifully laid out show with some excellent magic by Teller. In particular, his updated version of the Misers' Dream using coins and fish, and a thread routine using a giant red ball - both VERY MAGICAL even for us jaded magicians. The show included other fun routines including their own version of cups and balls, flag burning/restoration, an exposure of cold reading, and the bullet catch. Tuesday afternoon: The Mac King Comedy Magic Show (Harrahs). What more can be said about Mac's show that hasn't already been posted on these boards in the past? What's remarkable is his ability to keep it fresh. While the act's structure doesn't change, the interactions with the audience participants make this an easy show to see over and over again (it was my 3rd time over course of past year). Today, one of his props failed to work on stage and it didn't phase him a bit. He worked around it with the kid on stage and nobody was the wiser. That's professional. Tuesday night: The Amazing Jonathan w/ Psychic Tanya (Harmon Theatre adjacent to Planet Hollywood). Jonathan has a new non-casino venue that fits his act quite nicely. Readers of magic magazines, etc already know about the problems that he's had dealing with casinos. The Harmon is a 400 seat intimate theatre that is perfect for what I'll call gonzo comedy/magic. This is a very funny show albeit not for people who disapprove of "colorful" language. This is much more of a comedy show with a magic theme, rather than a magic show where you watch someone performing tricks (although some are thrown in). He and Tanya work off of one another and this premise works great. She is to Jonathan what Pam is to Johnny Thompson (as the Great Tomsoni and Co.). It would be hard to find comedic actresses play their parts as well as they do. The majority of this fast-paced approximately 2 hour show revolves around the use of a spectator from the audience. Tonight, it was a physician attending the same convention as I and it was absolutely hysterical. You can watch short clips from the show at: http://www.amazingj.com/ Wednesday night: Lance Burton Master Magician (Monte Carlo). I hadn't seen this show in a few years. I'm basically a close-up/bar magic guy whose not particularly crazy about illusions, but Lance's show made me feel like a kid again, discovering magic for the first time. A very classy act from start to finish. His reputation is well-deserved. I would highly recommend all of these shows to visiting magicians. However, the highlight was not attending the shows; rather, my friend and I had a great lunch together with Johnny Thompson at the Carnegie Deli (Mirage Hotel) where he absolutely fried us with his versions of routines such as "Quadruple Coincidence" and "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," both using borrowed decks. ***, he's good!!! (and you'll be hard pressed to find a nicer guy in this world). We didn't hit Boomers this time (Gary Darwin's weekly magic club meets there every Wednesday night at 10 PM) as the chocolate/banana crepes were calling us from the Venetian/Palazzo hotel. (Also, highly recommended!) Well, that's it for this trip. Back to the office tomorrow AM. Happy Halloween to all!
Life is an improv. The game goes on...
