I love "The Three Shell Game" !!
I bought the School for Scoundrels set. It is far superior to the Vernet set, in that the Peas can be used on any surface. With the Vernet set, you need a Close up Mat or Table cloth. I don't know which DVD you have, but I recommend Bob Sheets, "Absolutely Nuts". Anything from Patrick Page is very good also. Chris

The School for Scoundrels "Introduction to the Shell Game" Is a great pathway from beginner to intermediate skill level. It is taught by Bob Sheets, Whit Haydn, and Chef Anton, and also includes a wealth of written material in the form of PDFs.. They have recently released the next volume, which purportedly takes up where the first left off. I have not seen it yet, but I'm waiting to receive a copy as I type this. If it is up to the level of their other material, it should be excellent. Don

I haven't ordered my copy of the new S4S DVD, but I definitely will. That DVD has a lot of excellent material on it.
The Sheets DVD has some good material about spectator management. Bear in mind that if you plan to do this as a street hustle, you will need at least four more players.

The shells are great. It was one of the tricks I used when I auditioned for the magic castle. The two best routines, in my opinion are the Bob Kohler "Golden Shells" routine and gary Ouellet's "Super Shells" Both are pretty similar and both are fairly easy. The firstSFS video is fantastic as well, but I don't like the routine that is included in the video. In the Ouellet and Kohler routines the hand that is doing the work is never moving on it's own and therefore the moves are much more hidden. In the Beaumont routine included in the original SFS video only one hand is used and therefore all the focus is on it. There is another routine included in a PDF file on the SFS dvd that is interesting, but I still prefer the Kohler or Ouellet versions.

Get Kohler's routine and If the DVD you received was the Penquin routine by Jay Nosbleeda (I think) , and it's as good as the trailer makes it seem, climb up on a high roof and toss it off. It's absolutely horrible. Don't be sold by the teen-ager routines. Get the Kohler DVD and you'll be set for a while. Then get the Phil Cass routine if you want to see where you could take it one day. (i think based on supershells), then get the SFS DVDs to see how you can add "extra ideas" into the mix. No reason you can't use the Kohler routine until you have a reason not to. Great stuff!

Except for some added storytelling, Whit Haydn pretty much uses Kohler's routine too. Great place to start. Very little to go wrong, no heavy "I'm right, you're wrong" moments. Phil Cass is,... well Phil Cass. I don't have the personality to pull off his routine (which is pretty much Oulette's Super Shells BTW)
I really like the additional "maneuvers" that Whit brings to the table. Now, I can break out of the scripted "routine" mode and actually play the game for real (real fun, that is) moving things around as I see fit.

Trying to decipher what you meant to write, let me say this: Unless you have a specialized routine that needs them, there are more uses for the magnetic pea alone without using the mag shell.
Physically they're identical to the Street Shells except they have the magnet molded into them.

Frank Garcia's Old Video has an excellent easy to do shell game I learned in one night.

I'll second the vote on the Garcia routine. I learned it from his book, "All In a Nutshell," and for years I used that routine in almost all of my close-up performances.
I stopped doing the shells in the late '80s, but last year I got the first SFS shell game DVD and started up with them again. I've just ordered the latest SFS DVD, and I'm looking forward to seeing where it takes me. Who knows--perhaps I'll feel inspired enough to add the shells back into my active repertoire. |

I only performed the shells one time for a trade show. The Dr. had to find the pea(lesion) to win a token to win a 3 minute chair massage. I had to let some win!
The problem I have now, is all the shows I do have no tables, so I would have to figure out how to do it without a table. There was the guy in the New Orleans French Quarter doing it on an unfolded folded piece of cardboard, balanced with one hand, and switching the "shells" with the other hand. He could close it up if the cops came by and it looked like a piece of trash. He used liter bottle tops for the shells and a piece of sponge for the "pea". He probably made more money on the game than any of us did in performing, and he probably had the cheapest props of anyone, considering they cost him nothing. ACE

The shells and their peas from Scoundrels are great. I personally feel that if you can combine the technical aspects while combining it playfully with some of Darwin Ortiz's thoughts about challenge tricks, this routine is up there with anything from a viewer's entertainment standpoint.

Whit Haydn and the School for Scoundrels have acquired high resolution footage of Sam's work, and have put it on the new Shells DVD they just released. Sam (RIP) was a master of the shells, and watching him hustle is watching a textbook example of what the shells should really look like. If you're a member of the School for Scoundrels forum, you can see Sam's work in a lower resolution video online. (There's a "gambling sam" on YouTube as well, but he appears to be a different guy). A few years ago Gambling Sam posted quite a bit on the School for Scoundrels forums as well....it's amazing insight into the shell game to read what he has to say. It's worth checking out if you're into the Shells at all. |

So I don't do cups and balls BUT I CAN do a chop cup routine in my hands, with loads in each side pocket. So I am doing the "Cup and Ball" It works very well, and I am not limited to having to carry around a table or being behind a table. One of the reason I was successful at trade shows, it that I pushed the table against the back of the booth, and stood in front, so I could greet people and be right next to them. I always built a crowd, and almost always had security come to break up my crowd, as we were blocking the isle, and it made the other booths upset. My clients loved me! ACE
