We have 2 cats.
Muffin is the older cat. She is afraid of everything, doesn't like anyone but my wife. Runs from everyone. Our other cat, Mitten, is to all appearances a normal cat. Our vet suggested that we might want to look at mood drugs for Muffin. However, there is one very interesting difference between the 2 cats, seen in their eyes (specifically, their pupils - the dark portion in the center of their eyes that - on cats - look like slits). Mitten (normal cat) has pupils that are narrow, vertical slits. Again, like a...normal...cat. Muffin (weird cat) has pupils that are extremely wide, almost as wide as the iris (the colored area surrounding the pupil). I mean, her pupils are BIG. I never noticed until someone pointed it out, and when I compared, the difference was startling. Now, they are both gray tabbys (with the "M" shape on their foreheads). The normal cat is a little more long-haird, while the weird one is a definite short-hair. Any thoughts on how their eyes might reveal an internal problem, either psychological or physical? Our vet takes care of both, and he has said nothing about the eyes. I suppose he might not have picked up. Who knows...?!?!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

The pupil in humans enlarge to let more light in. No?
I'm thinking that Mitten has an eye problem and is not so sure what she's seeing. Was she always a scaredy cat? |

As I'm sure you know, the pupil gets wider to let more light into the eye so they can focus and see better. If your cat's eye isn't able to focus, that may be at least one of the reasons it runs away from things. Blown pupils (mydriasis) can be caused by different things, including disorders, injuries, and poisoning/drug use. It can also be a symptom of things like a stroke.
If you haven't noticed any other physical or behavioral changes, I wouldn't worry about it. Keep an "eye" on it, and ask the vet on your next trip.

Hi,
Muffin sounds like one of my cats who I suspect suffers from a neurological disorder..even the vet can't tell me if she had a stroke. My gut feeling tells me it may be. She's had blood test, x-rays and even ultra sound but nothing conclusive so far - she does have that wide eyed look you describe. Daisy was always "quirky" compared to my other cats but one day her tail would not stop swishing back and forth. Not like an annoyed cat but to the extreme..sideways so it touched the floor each time in a rapid manner. I at first suspected some sort of spinal injury as her backside swished as well - but x-rays have cancelled that out. I've written on numerous animal forums asking if anyone has come across their cat doing the same thing and many cat savy people told me it sounded like a stroke possibly. Perhaps Muffin had a mild one? That, or it could be glaucoma or some other digenerative eye disease. Another of my rescue animals had conjunctivitis (untreated) and found as a stray with a raging infection which caused the loss of his eye. One of my dogs has glaucoma and very limited sight in his eye. Shadows startle him at dusk, lights flickering from a fireplace or someone approaching on his "blind side" will cause him to startle too. (The majority of the animals at my place are special needs rescues just in case you're thinking I have terrible luck with my pets). I usually get them after they've had injuries of some sort. I'm not sure if my post helped at all but quess the next step would be for another vet to check her over? Good luck and keep me posted as to what it may be. Hope Muffin will be okay. Chrystal |

Are both eyes like that? It is possible she is blind or bad vision, and being that she is scared of everything, it might be because she doesn't recognize anything properly. Maybe she only sees blobs of light. Cats also recognize smells though, and maybe she only trusts your wife because she can associate the scent of your wife and relate that to being something comforting.
Can she follow a laser pointer on the floor or walls? Just a thought. Or maybe she just smoked too much catnip... |
