I hope no one tries to rob me for my jewelry. Festivals, I feel relaxed because a lot of people are around. But in an area where not many people are around, I will be a little nervous in Detroit.

I just closed my 2nd year of street performing and, as to the best of my knowledge, no one has nicked anything from me yet.
Notice the word "yet" in there. It will happen, I know it will. Now, my house Gnomes and my darling 4 year old like to snag my stuff all the time.

Dynamike, if someone holds you up for your bling/jewellery, throw it out to one side and, while they're running off to get it, climb on your giraffe with your boxes in tow and HIGH tail it away! We do need to look after ourselves, alright. Mario's approach with a back-up set is good, and I had already got under way with building a back-up or alternative set of gear.
The presentation makes the magic.

I did a school show a few years ago. After the show, I went out into the hall way to talk to the teachers.
As I was talking, I saw a kid walking down the hall with some rope in his hand. I ran back to the stage and saw about ten kids walking off with some of my items. There was an old teacher there, and I asked why she let the kids take my items. She told me that the show was over, and I didn't need them no more. What a day! |

On the streets, it makes you a prime target. So, here are a few tips I have learned.
1 - If you can leave it behind, do so. Your wallet, all plastic, so on. 2 - Only have one bag if you can help it. 3 - The best case bag, I believe, is an old lady shopping bag. You know, the ones that come with a trolley and so on. I have found that these trolleys pack down small. They are inexpensive and, down hear in Spain, it helps you blend in well. In other words, every other street hawker or busker has one. Could you imagine some one running off with a shopping trolley in the middle of the city? If you make it easy for them, they will, but an old lady shopping bag I guess they will think twice. The best thing about it is they were designed with the streets in mind. Mario |
