I own several Nielsen bottles and I like them a great deal. It does however seem to me that I'm not realising the full potential of these wonderful props. I mostly use them for disappearance purposes but I would like to explore two other areas that could be of interest. The first is appearances - any suggestions on how to make them appear in parlor/close-up settings? I have searched for info on this but not found much (the Bottle Book deals mostly with disappearances). The second area is to use the properties of these bottles to achieve effects where the bottles are used as supporting props rather than being the primary focal points of the effects. I am, quite frankly, unsure what this could be but I thought I would raise the question anyway. I hope there is someone out there who can make sense of this rather vague question!

I would avoid producing them in close-up or parlor situations, particularly those where a member of the audience could reach out and touch one of them.

I used the mini bottle to start with. I show the bag - unroll it and take out the mini bottle. I would go into the bag (drop it) and take out the full size bottle. next is the classic vanish.
karrell foxx did a nice thing. he had 2 paperbag holding with his hand in onne side he did the bottle. he would then turn his hand to fool the people and said that the bottle is moved to the othe bag. and back again. |

Rich Marotta has a nice routine, which I use, on one of his DVD's. I can't remember which volume though.

In my opinion MY routine is the best...ok...so it's not MY routine...but it's still the best in my opinion as I'm sure Fielding West would agree (since it's HIS routine).
Pass out a real coke bottle for examination, pull out a paper bag (do yer switch) and drop the coke bottle in the bag. Go thru all the classic "It's Gone!" gags. At the end, you pull out a full glass of wine or coke or lemonade, whatever...and then crush the bag to show the bag is empty. The cool thing about FWs routine is even tho you never show the bag empty at the beginning, b/c you have inverted the bag several times upside down when you remove the full glass of whatever, that fact proves that it was empty b/c the liquid from the glass never spilled out on the floor...and then crushing the bag shows that the bag is still empty. So it's not a vanish...its a change. The bottle changes to a full glass of liquid. Fielding really hit the nail on the head with this one, and the motivation for the routine is spot on. The routine is one one of his DVDs....the exact one escapes me right now...

I don't think I'd use a NB for a production.
Martin Lewis has a clever little routine called "snacks alive". It's on his Making Magic DVD series.
Mediocrity is greatly under rated!

David Acer has a trick on one of his DVD's...I don't own it but saw this clip.
It used an NB , a paper bag and a cool spellbound changing of the cap to change what was in the bag. Great application. Kevin |

The Fielding West routine sounds great. Thanks for the suggestion.

I saw Fielding West lecture not too long ago and he also has some nice work on appearances with Nielsen bottles. Basically he used a dove technique to make the bottle appear. I use it in walk around situations since it is masked completely from virtually all angles.

You can also do a "bottle change." if you have a coke bottle for instance, have a REAL water bottle in a paper bag. Put the coke bottle in and "change" it to a water bottle, then change it back. Do it a few times with some comedy byplay and then toss the water bottle to someone int he audience, and crumple up the bag and throw it over your shoulder.
