I've heard, that in the past, there was a section where members could post and/or share their experiences from the Lets Make a Deal section.
I have read the policy and sticky and am aware the Café mgmt has decided to stay completely "uninvolved." My point of discussion, is should the members have the right to share and possibly protect each other? Without any liability from the Café itself...is this realistic? My activity has primarly been as a buyer. I have spent thousands of dollars and have had vast success with 99% of my transactions. Again, I am aware of the "buyer beware" guidance.... In the past year, I have been involved in some transactions with two sellers on the Café. During one transaction, the Café mgmt was very quick to contact and warn me of possible fraudulent activity on the sellers end. (I am extrememly thankful for this) With quick action by Paypal and my credit card provider, I was saved the potential loss of over $1000. In other series of transactions from a well known seller here. I have potentially lost several thousand dollars due to the seller ceasing communication with me altogether without providing reason. Several members have "gently hinted" at similar experiences. In the case of the latter vendor, the Café mgmt has been quick to enforce their policy of not getting involved and deleting posts that violate policy. (again, I don't question that) I'm left with a rhetorical comment/question. Why, in some cases, are we able to band together (as an online community) and "protect" each other from losses; as in example # 1. But in example # 2, members are left in the dark to the risk they may experience with that vendor. I put this forth with complete respectful intentions to all concerned. This forum is a resource that is second to none and I'm only suggesting, what I consider to be, an improvment. Best to all, Mike |

This is why I only use PayPal unless the person is a regular around the Café.
I think the main problem with allowing members to post about their experiences is that, as with many magic related topics, it quickly gets out of hand. It is simply easier and more effective for the moderators to ban the topics altogether. |

My concern, and only concern is that glowing reviews can be made or vendors and products, and the posts will remain forever.
However, should a thread or a post have negative comments for some vendors it disappears. While I understand the value of trying to keep a positive forum (And this is one of the few that are positive), but this might give a skewed view of the real situation... especially to a magician new to the forum who comes to make his decision of which vendor or product to use, possibly spending quite a bit of money. I don't have any idea of how this could be remedied, but it's just my spoke.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

The forum you have been referencing was called 'Sweet and Sour'. It was designated for the review of dealers and transactions. The problems associated with the forum were two fold. As discussed above, the threads often times degenerated into back and forth name calling. And in several situations, we were able to determine that many of the complaints came from individuals who had never done business with the alleged violator. The problems became unmanageable and it was determined to remove the forum.
Having said all that, if you have a concern about a transaction, you are free to privately PM all concerned and let them decide whether or not to act on your advice.

So far.....I sinerely appreciate the thoughs being shared.....
It's not a perfecy system...and I can recoginze that! Here's hoping we might still come up with a system to "protect" each other. If this "hypothetical" system was in place a year ago....I would likelt have several thousand $$$'s stil sitting in my bank account. I am also CERTAIN this SAME set of circumstance would apply to, at least, 10 other members! Again, respectfully.... Mike McErlain P.S. I glad, at least, we are discussing the pros and cons of this......it's an ongoing education for me, I just wish, selfishly speaking, it didn't have the "cost factor" attached,,, Again....the best to all! |

The sweet and sour forum that Steven mentioned above was basically established to talk about dealers. I believe you are discussing transaction in the Let's make a deal forum.
The problem with this type of discussion in the public forums is that in most cases, the problem experienced is unique and the there may be perfectly good reasons why the transaction was not completed as expected. When you post a negative comment in public, you are possibly jeopardizing a persons reputation unjustly. People being human, immediately form opinions and start posting comments either in the persons defense or in adding to a situation that they really know nothing about. For that reason, problems encountered in the let's make a deal forum should be handled privately between the buyer and seller and not in public.

Again, thanks all. The logic is inescapable! Clearly, there is no perfect solution; I can see the potential for "open critisism" getting out of hand and impossible to police.

Dave, Like Mike I had many transactions on the make a deal section, mostly positives, and while I understand that negative feedback could be a problem I think that positive feedback could help to separate good buyer/sellers from bad buyer/sellers.
I'd like to propose a GOOD Transaction Post, where we could only put good experiences with other members. Any negative will be deleted. Could this work? |

Negative responses already get deleted.
Magic is a vanishing art.

I understand that negatives are already deleted, but if we keep the positives then we can have some type of guide, better than no feedback at all

There is no way to control such a topic. For awhile we had a topic listing good sellers. It quickly got out of hand. Instead of members looking at names that had already been posted, they posted the same names over and over. While a seller may be good for most, everyone makes a mistake now and then. That is when the negative posts are made. We would have to continually review that topic to look for negatives. Besides, who's to say whether the positive or negative should be deleted. It is opinionated based on personal experience.
Basically to answer your question, no we will not have a topic for such information. The rules for let's make a deal are simple. The Café is not involved and members should do their homework before making a deal.
