They say that what Mr. Neighbors can create in a 24 hour period will take a mortal coin man a lifetime to master!
My next book after Bobo was Roth, which for me was a good progression! My first MCM is now falling apart from constant ref., and I have a new one on the shelf for when the old finally disintegrates! Enjoy the journey, Mick |

Funny you should mention that Mickey. Somehow, when I ordered my copy of Bobo's, two were sent. After asking if I should return it, and hearing back to just enjoy it, I thought about selling the second. But then, I looked at the condition of the one I had been using for a couple weeks. Yeah, having an extra copy might be good.

I love David Neighbor's stuff, but it can be on the difficult side of things. I think there is material out there between Bobo's and David Neighbor's that you should also try. Two that come to mind:
- The Best of Slydini and more. It has more than coin work, but his approach is very different from most coin magic, and I think worth looking into. Most of the work must be done seated. However, the thinking behind it is very useful. - Revolutionary Coin Magic by Jay Sankey (DVD). Also different from Bobo's. |

Thanks, Mark. I second that about Jay Sankey's video. If you get RCM 1.0, you should get 2.0 as well. They are dirt cheap on his website.

I purchased my first copy of Bobo's in 1971 at Hollywood Magic. I remember taking it home and, at some point, convinced myself that I had read it and studied it. As a matter of fact, I noted the effects.
From then to now, I can't even count the number of times I've seen something done and asked, "Were did you find that gem?" The answer is usually Bobo's. It is a never-ending treasure of information. By the way, Mike, I ordered a copy of Bobo's a while back and never received it. So if you don't mind, send me my book. LOL |

There's some wicked good stuff in that book! Some of the reworking of classic tricks from Bobo are AWESOME! Take a look at Tim "Captain" Feher's stuff to see some of the influence Bobo has in his work! Search around for Rannie Raymundo's "Madabout Coins"! My friend Broccoli from Japan does a beautiful job with "Winged Silver" along with some others!
I, too, got my first Bobo's at Hollywood Magic! |

But everyone should learn some Slydini stuff! Even if you never sit down! There's lots of stuff on Body Language in there that if you do coin magic, you should know!!! Ok, later, gang! |

I second Roth's "Expert Coin Magic". Also, (not just for coins) there is great material in "The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings" and "Steel and Silver".

Keep on reading: Richard Kaufman's Coin Magic, David Roth, Jim Buffaloe, Lou Gallo, David Neighbors, Curtis Kam, Kainoa Harbottle, Reed McLintock...
Keep on watching: John Ramsay, David Roth, Michael Rubinstein, Johnny Thompson, Dean Dill, Joe Rindfleisch, Sol Stone, Mike Gallo, Garrett Thomas, Shoot Ogawa, Dan Watkins, Eric Jones, Craig Petty, New York Coin Magic Seminar, Coinvention... for a start. Then choose one effect (just one) which you really like for being slightly off the beaten path. Read Darwin Ortiz Designing Miracles. Then build your own routine using as much of what you discovered to create your own routine. Create a character, find a theme (consistent with the persona), write a script, streamline it, rehearse, rehearse again, practice, practice, practice and then present it. It may take you as much as reading Bobo and watching all the videos but you'll end up with something you own. Something which will be you.

I hope I don't repeat a lot of what Lawrence said, but just to put in my two cents, the new York Coin Magic Seminar DVD's are meant to teach not only modern classics of magic, but also give new insights and ideas on a wide variety of coin topics. Not only are there comprehensive discussions on moves like the shuttle pass, classic palm, etc, but there are innovative ideas, and practical routines that are all workers, by Roth, Rubinstein, Gallo, Latta, and guests like Harbottle and Bertini, and contributors like Eric Jones, Dan Watkins and Marc DeSouza. The series comprises 7 volumes, on all aspects of coin magic - coins across, copper silver, and productions, vanishes, and penetrations. There are 7 volumes right now (and three more being edited!!!)comprising over 17 hours of practical coin magic for all levels from beginner to advanced. (and there is a special sale until Christmas if you check a bit further down in this section).
The Roth book and Kaufman's Coinmagic are both excellent reference books, and should be on the shelves of every coin magician. Al Schneider on Coins is a wonderful book that I studied after Bobo, and is a wonderful resource (and overlooked by many, but it is a classic). It is available as an e book from Al Schneider on his website. David Neighors has a plethora of material out there in book and note form, and if you like gaffs, its a good place to look. The Roth DVD's and my own Encyclopedia of coin sleights both contain important coin material for any coin worker, have been out for over 20 years, and have stood the test of time by being among the most popular DVD sets sold to date. After this, you have such a wide selection of DVD material from Curtis Kam, Reed McCLintock (who has a series of booklets called the Knucklebuster series), Dean Dill, Troy Hoosier, Gary Kurtz, Giacomo Bertini, and Al Schneider, all great coin workers. More information on DVD is being distributed by the newer coin guys, like Chris Korn, Rannie Raymundo (some great coin stuff, just watch his You Tube pieces), Dan Watkins, John Born, Craig Petty (some wonderful ideas here)Joe Reinfleish (I hope I got his name right), the COINvention DVD, Eric Jones, Bill Citino, and the list goes on and on. There are even compilation DVD's from L&L where you have a chance to get coin material from several workers who did not put out exclusive coin stuff, but L&L put their coin material together, giving you easy access. There is so much great material out there, and today we have the the opportunity to gather all of this material very easily. I wish I had all of these resources when I was starting out! Good luck with your journey, it should be a fun ride!!!

Between Lawrence O and Doc Rubinstein here it should be obvious that coin magic is vast and there's a lot to learn and a lot of available sources that should be reviewed to some extent on the way to better overall comprehension of the art.
I would add that there are other shelves in the cabinet to look into as to good coin magic. Many have been studying Bobo's and many of the others mentioned here and have also developed good work worth looking into. Many times it's stuff that of all the things mentioned already, they still have a uniqueness to them that perhaps you will not find in any of the works mentioned. That's most likely because thoughts about how all this stuff can come from anywhere, even you (the initiator of this string). Some stuff is not so profoundly presented in seminars, of fancy dvds or gigantic reputation, etc. Some are low budget, others no-budget but still real gems as good magic can be found in all sorts of soil, on the great stage or on the streets. I think God made it that way on purpose. Anyway, with all of that said, I also mention folks here like The Godfather, Vinny Marini, Tim Feher, Mano and others like Justin Miller that have endeavored and came up with all sorts of coin magic (i.e., moves, routines, thinking/theory, etc.) and have also made it available via manuscripts, dvds, downloads and even through gifts and immeasurable amounts of assistance to others on the journey and along the winding way. So there are many roads from here to Tipperary. And there is much to be learned all along the way from the big, small and all in-between. With all of this the wise man realizes as Socrates did when he said that the one thing he knew was that he did not know, or something like that.
