I wonder if certain nutritional supplements, such as ginseng, Gotu Kola or other ones that are reputed to enhance brain function and memory would be efficacious in these grueling situations where long mental stamina and endurance is required?
Then would come the ethics question, as in traditional sports and steroids, if these things are to be allowed to be in one's blood system when one is playing??

A few years back a number of Western players complained that the Chinese players all smelled strongly of Tiger Balm and that they found it distracting. Apparently, the Chinese players (women, IIRC) were rubbing the balm into their faces to help them stay focused.
This year, at the Chess Olympiad in Dresden, a number of players were randomly pulled out for drug testing. Apparently, nobody thinks that there are performance-enhancing drugs for chess, but FIDE (the chess governing body) is desperately trying to live up to IOC standards.Ukrainian superstar Vassily Ivanchuk refused the drug test, causing a bit of a ruckus. I don't know how things finished in the end, but here's a report from about two weeks ago: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=5048 John

What I am thinking, though is this: Would herbal supplements be considered as drugs?
