Hey everyone!
I really like magical things to happen in between the primary effects - stuff like the shrinking card case for example. Something that isn't an effect in itself but rather happens to you by accident (Ã la Cardini) or something you completely underplay and don't even pay attention to because for you it's normal to have magic happen around you. I found these kind of effects help a lot in creating a "magical athmosphere" for your performance. Would someone like to share some of the effects he uses in such cases or what you can think of that fits the bill? best regards, Nic |

In Frank Balzerak's DVD "Magic for Humans" he has someone sign a card and pulls out a red Sharpie Marker. He them makes mention that their card is red and then nonchalantly changes the Sharpie to black and says black will show up better.
Looks real good and fits what I think you are looking for. DP

I very much like this sort of thing as well.
Now that I incorporate more mentalism-themed effects, I feel this is a good way to incorporate visual magic, without detracting from the theme. A few I user regularly: a match pull from my lapel whenever I need fire or doing the classic "shuffling the cards before they are out of the box" bit. I also like an effect where you "accidentally" drop soemthing and absentmindedly levitate it back in your hand. Right now I do thsi with the muscle pass, but am thinking about getting an ITR to do the effect with a more substantial object.

I love to pepper my routines with such peripheral effects, and I have many that I use, but I only do so when it doesn't detract from the focus owed main effect. There are times when I use many, and times when I wouldn't dare use a one.
It is easy to put things in when sometimes it may be better to leave them out. It is easy to forget that we already know the routine, but that the audience doesn't. Clarity is of prime concern at all times. Think of your act as an artist thinks of his painting. Interesting 'discoveries' are fun for the observer, but too many brush strokes can muddy the final product.

Colour changing sharpie - great idea!
And after that vanishing it Natanel: I've also been thinking about some thread work and levitations but I haven't found anything yet that is "subtle" enough. Btw, does someone who owns a Mark Allen Thread Manager could confirm if this device allows a card to fall to the floor and the bring it up again? Thanks! Michael, I absolutely agree with your approach. That's why I use these little goodies mostly in between effects and not during. |

I usually end the card phase of my routine by vanishing the deck since I don't need it anymore.
