Dear forum
I have been interested in magic for the last twenty years or so. Nothing professional, just tricks, etc., on friends and family. I have been amazed at some of the things available to buy online and am getting rather over awed and confused. I have managed to get my choices down to these, what would you suggest: (i) M5 from ellusionist.com (ii) Magic spy wallet from Peter Nardil (iii) Mind Power deck (iv) some of the video material from ellusionist.com (v) meeting point (vi) silver shifter Please help, I don't want take too much of a risk and buy a "dud" effect. many thanks Phil |

All those effects are good but you need to decide what you want it for. I would probably say for you get the video stuff from illusions because from it you can learn loads of good stuff so you can build up your arsnal. Especialy if you are just performing for frends.
You can amaze them with a whole round of tricks but I would probably go for the m5 because some of the effects possible with it sound like real magic. Effects like stopping watches etc. That's just my 2 cents and I hope it helped

Advice:
1. Not anything from ellusionist. 2. If you don't have any books then take a look at the list at the top of this forum. That is the best way to make your money stretch. At least go for Royal Road to Card Magic, and Modern Coin Magic, available from Amazon for about £20 the pair. You will get far more mileage, and satisfaction out of these than from any gimmicks. 3. If you are really bent on gimmicks then try to talk to someone in a magic shop for advice and demos; Davenports or International magic in London for example. You are much less likely to come away disappointed and poor. If anything go for one of the trick decks (Brainwave/Invisible/Blizzard) which are relatively inexpensive and very good. |

Take the hundred pounds, spend five on Modern Coin Magic (which will give you enough material for several lifetimes) and mail the rest to me!

Before buying any super-cool gimicks, make sure you have at least two of the following and have mastered multiple routines:
"Mark Wilsons Complete Course in Magic" book, "Modern Coin Magic" book "Royal Road to Card Magic" book "Now you see it, Now you Don't" book "Michael Ammars Complete introductionto Coin Magic" DVD (or equivalent from Stone/Roth) My personal recomendation is to buy the following: "Mark Wilsons Complete Course in Magic" book, 3 decks of cards, 5 english pennies, two bandanas, 10 meters of magicians rope, 3 nesting plastic cups, 4 sponge balls and 4 small cotton balls.
Magic is fun!!!

Phil:
I'm very impressed with Mark Leveridge. He performs in restaurants and for children, and does a great job. He's got some great products too. Check them out here: http://www.markleveridge.co.uk/ By all means get a copy of "Mark Wilson Complete Course in Magic". It has plenty of material that you could do for friends and family. And it's affordable. Here it is on Amazon.com (available May 13th, 2003): Frank

Harry Loranye's Magic Book and Mark Wilson Complete Course on Magic. They should give your enough materials for practising for a while.
Encyclopedia of card tricks and modern coin magic are also worth your attention Alex

Yes as said above royal road to card magic is good but it sounds like it's just something you do for fun and therefore gimmicks maybe your thing.
However if you are up for the challenge of learning sleight of hand then royal road will get you started with cards and bobo with coins
