Hi guys not too sure where this post fits so I'll try it here. Basic I've done a year review of my magic and how it developed. As kid I had the odd magic set and have always enjoyed magic. When I was at college I really got in to juggling and occasionally brought the odd trick. About 3 years ago a guy at work haw is really in to their magic. This sparked of my interest in magic again.
At were I work we have our Christmas party beginning of January and I usually do the odd bit of magic. past year I did a small amount of single tricks and bits and bobs. But this year I was doing more routine stuff also there were two occasions were I pulled a crowd of about 15-20 and did some larger routines. In the past 18months I've done a lot work on slights, chartered development and routines. In the past year I have done, .Two small festivals - (Close up walk round, Cups and balls, juggling) .6walk round sets for cabaret show at a local church, .3-4 set for mates birthdays and other stuff, .Some time out on the street busking (Diablos, small magic shows. Ive had some problems with this but ill keep trying. All in all I have developed a lot and have four walk routines each consisting of 3-4 tricks, each trick linked buy a story. I have 2 other routines for larger crowd stuff and smallish stage. I also have a small street act that needs stretching out on the street but I have a few never problems to sort out. I'll probably stay a hobbyist and week end worrier for a while just enjoying my magic. But I would first like to say thank you for all post and info we put together its a great help. Also dose any one have any comments on any thing I should be doing or looking at. I am planing to get out on the street a bit more also develop my charter and act more. Also I may just put a web site together so if people are interested I have place were they can see more of what I do. Any comments and advice would be great.

I have a great day job, but I also love magic. Being an restaurant magician a couple of nights a week and a weekend warrior fits me just fine. Don't feel like you have to take the plunge into being a full time worker until you are sure you want to. Many great magicians never went full time. Have a great time and make a little money. that's the life for me. Grow into your venues.

I used to be full time and then one winter I got a really bad cold and couldn't work for two weeks. I had no income for two weeks. My wife at the time had the same cold and she got paid to stay in bed. Then I got a job and became a part-time magician. Great thing was the owner of the comapny I worked at knew I was a magician and I was allowed time off once in a while to do shows on the condition that I did free shows at her kids birhtdays (twice a year) and the company's X-mas/year end. Then I got a great offer at a bank and only worked weekends and now I am just a hobbyist who does a few shows a year because I work too much. The past few years has been the most fun I have had in magic because there is a lot less pressure and I enjoy it a a hobby.

Yellowcustard,
I too am a part-time Pro. I have a "day job" as an engineer. I do paid magic shows whenever the opportunity arises. I work part time (very part time) at Magic Island in Houston doing close-up magic. On my "day job" I have lots of different meetings with lots of different people. I usually do a trick or two depending on the situation. My customers like it, and I get a lot of chance to practice. You should definitely put a website together. It does not have to be very fancy. A domain name and hosting service can be very cheap, you probably do not need to spend a lot of money. Mine (http://www.hebertmagic.com) is about $5 a month, and I could probably do it for less if I did not have video clips. If you want to use Youtube then you would need very little disk space, which means you don't need to spend a lot of money. Also, invest in business cards. Spacecop - I have visited NASA - Michoud, is that where you work? Good luck!
Practice what you present.

Living the high life as a full time professional is where it's at. It offers many challenges and its rewarding when you're able to overcome those challenges. I'm married with a child so the "hooking up from women from my gigs" doesn't quite fit my mold (ahhh to be young again!) but the point of having "freedom" is well understood!
