So here's a highly acclaimed but heavily disputed film. I respect Michael Moore's work and have been looking forward to finally seeing it (didn't play at theaters in my town). So I go to rent it and guess what? Every video store in my town is refusing to carry it. I ask why. The response is that Mister Bigshots of whatever who authorize which movies go for rental decided no, they're not carrying it. It's too controversial.
I can rent the most inane movies from any of my local video chains that glamorize sex, drugs, and murder, but if someone makes a film that tries to maturely address a sensitive topic, in this case gun control, it's shunned. What message are we sending to our youth when our media forces vulgar and insipid movies on them, but gets scared when someone makes a film of any relevance or intelligence? If "Bowling For Columbine" was changed so it was about teenagers being killed by zombies or added in a few car chases, would it have been approved? Certainly my town can't be the only one doing this. I wish I could talk to Mister Bigshot and ask him why he feels movies like "Scooby-Doo" and "Armageddon" are more appropriate than "Bowling For Columbine." Are they consciously trying to severe any hope that filmmaking is an art form and not just something people stare at blankly to pass the time? Feel free to discuss if you have any interest.

That is not the reason they dropped it. It is because of Mr. Moore's speech at the Ocars.

Moore's speech at the Oscars was certainly not a high-light and even he acknowledges that. But what does that have to do with the merits of his film? Everyone involved in the project gets punished by not having their film available to rent to the public, because Moore said some unwise things in his speech? What happened to separating the artist from the art? If that's really the reason then that just raises a whole new set of issues.

Totally ridiculous.
Polanski - whom i think is a great director but also was arrested and kicked out of the country for statutory rape, was uproriously applauded at the oscars. Moore made a speech at an inappropriate time and people are not going to carry his movie, which is one of the few movies this year that actually shows any caring to this country. crazy Matt |

Hey Matt. I thought it was hilarious. Being liberal, I agreed with Michael Moore.
Everyone seems to keep bringing up Roman Polanski's crime. It's a thing of the past and he truly did deserve the OScar. The Oscar's are about film not the nominees' personal life. And yes they won't carry Bowling For Columbine because it is too contraversial. I think the documentary was awesome. It was very meaningful and it really makes you think, deeply. Andrew |

Roman Polanski was not “kicked” out of the country for his crime. He fled justice and cannot return, as there is no statute of limitation for child sexual molestation (the crime he is accused of). If he returned to California for any reason he could be arrested, held without bail (as a proven flight risk), and put on trial where he would risk being found guilty and sentenced to a lengthy prison term).
I don’t think that the clerk in the video store was totally accurate by saying that the store didn’t want to carry this "controversial" film. The fact is most of the major video rental chains will carry it and have their order in for it when the studio finally releases it to video/DVD. The studio is currently NOT producing this title on VHS or DVD at this time. When it is released I believe that you will find it on the shelves of the rental stores and if not, you can always buy a copy from Amazon.com (get you name on their automatic emailer to be notified when it’s released). While I liked Moore’s film, I didn’t see it as a documentary. I saw it simply as a presentation of Moore’s personal view. My experience is not at all similar to his and I don’t totally agree with this thesis. But isn’t that difference of opinion what makes it all that more interesting?

I agree that moore (overtime) has moved further away from more traditional types of documentaries and journalism and moved towards talk show host type of delivery.
While this is not good or bad, I personally was more effected by roger and me and his early work than what I've seen of him lately. I think when you act so intensely it brings awareness to your issues but lessens your credibility as someone who is seeing things clearly. Matt |

Many of you may have done so, but if not then please read Michael Moore's book "Stupid White Men".
