I saw Dean Dill perform "Dean's Box" at his booth at the World Magic Seminar, very cool trick. Part of it includes an old rope trick published in a basic magic book by Harry Lorrayne years ago. Dean I believe is a Christian, his web site has his cubes to cross routine. But back to Dean's Box- it is just a super effect, I watched him do it many times over and over, always got a great reaction. A video of it is on his web site. At the end, the box, ring and ropes can be examined. But the cost is pretty high (although you might be able to get it at a discount from Hank Lee on one of their specials?), so I never considered purchasing it. If there might be a Gospel application out there for it, it may give me the weak excuse to get it for my birthday or something. Any suggestions? Forcing the issue of getting a Gospel application onto a fun trick (which sometimes ends up with a very weak application- e.g.- this linking ring represents the Holy Spirit, this Joker card represents our sins which transforms (via a double lift)into the King of Hearts (or something else equally strange), this dice represents the Gospels... that doesn't quite cut it. Maybe Dean's Box is better just as a trick... but who knows, anyone thought of a way to use this wonderful magic effect?

Have you asked Dean?
Terry P.S. The reason the tricks you mentioned don't quite cut it is because the linking ring represents sin, the joker represents the Gospels and the dice represent the Holy Spirit. Try it that way and you may feel differently.

I would tell a story about something that happened to me when I depended on the Holy Spirit as a background/introduction to the routine. I would then bring the spectators up and have them assist me as instructed in Dean's routine. I would then draw the parallel between my experience and the routine they just experienced. They would represent a person who can do unbelievable things when they depend on the one who can do miracles.
Of course, I would have already done a routine explaining the difference between the miracles of Christ and a magician, but once you have them on board, performing and drawing the appropriate metaphors becomes much easier. Now, I don't do a Gospel routine with the box and as Terry suggested talk to Dean. He is indeed a Christian and a wonderful man (he's also a member here). This is just an idea I came up while thinking about the routine; so it is in it's roughest, conceptual form, as I've stated it. Feel free to develop it further, use it as a starting point, or toss it. It's just an idea....that I may use some time in the future, if I ever develop a routine with this wonderful effect.

Basic Routine (thinking out loud):
Dean's box and tying it to the Wardrobe in Narnia - C.S. Lewis had many allusions to Christ, Heaven, the world, etc., in these works. You could also talk about it being a Miniature Church... and say, "My church has a very large door where all are welcome." That we as Christians, while we might be different from one another, are in the end are linked together. The second phase, not only are we linked but we find out sometimes that when we want to pull apart, when we want to leave the community, we find that we need to be linked together. One could throw in a final phase, by Scott Alexander, found in one of his DVD's (Midnight Show, I think) and show how it is really through God (Ring has long been used to represent the eternal nature and strength of God) that we are linked. I use it in conjunction with the Ark of the Covenant.
"The New York Papers," Mark Twain once said,"have long known that no large question is ever really settled until I have been consulted; it is the way they feel about it, and they show it by always sending to me when they get uneasy. "
