Sometimes when I use this force, I will be asked, "why are you counting from the bottom?" It still passes, but I hate it when the question is asked and I have no answer so it seems like I'm doing something fishy. What's a good response?

"No reason in particular. If you wish, we can select a card in a different manner." If they take you up on the offer, just square the deck and force the card a different way.

You might be able to find a reason based on the context of the trick. What's the presentation of the effect?

You could say its because some people excuse you of using marked cards. This way you can't see the back--look away and have them cover the back as they look at the card.
