I agree about "knack" and such being inappropriate for instructional texts. There is so much diversity in hand and finger size that much depends on the individual - say for me long thin fingers made CP and Ramsay style FP mechanics awkward and so I want to EG early on. On the other side it made the reverse pass (called Hermann by some till more read the Hofzinser works) a natural lead in to the OHTP.
For the OHTP, you'd be amazed how much action one can impart the top card of the pack with the fleshy pad just before the tip of one's pinky when holding the pack from above. Some have pivoted the card, others have palmed the card by almost bending the corner around the pack. Others have gone the short way around to reverse the card. It's a matter of a little friction and a good amount of force applied to suit. The question though comes when one considers what such plaintext means in our literature and whether such serves when a mentor can save one much trouble by demonstrating some things and pointing out the sources for things as the student is ready to explore. Kindly don't leave plaintext where muggles might find it on ebay or worse.

When well written expository text teaches secrets and can be read by those outside the craft - and we have an open market where layman can easily obtain magic data - is it not exposure plain and simple and so inappropriate to tempt the fates (or the internet) ...?
Keep secrets secret - and choose your students. What you offer into the market can likely be found in the internet just hours later.

Crediting really is an issue and lots of people credit well known magicians in good faith but being wrong. Also some sourcing historians are trying to make a name for themselves by inventing previous performers of moves etc... There are also sometime nationalistic aspects in the crediting, language aspects (where it appeared in one specific language for the first time doesn't mean it originated with that author: Hoffman being a perfect example)...
Bart Whaley is a source. It's full of mistakes but at least you would have done the effort to search and to give credit and you would not be responsible for the mistake (just state that you find the source there with page #). Kato-San is a very reliable source for card sources. I can be of help for everything that is close-up as I cover a very wide field in many languages and I'm not nationalistically biased (lived more outside France than in France and own most of the books and DVDs, knowing what's in there with a patiently researched and up dated fed database). We supply sources with the evidence (references possibly translated) not just the on going rumour. If not in need to check for something you discovered yourself and being wanting to know if it pre-existed (lots of things get reinvented in good faith over the years: which doesn't make the claim right) but just wanting to be fair, just mention who you learned something from without mentionning that your don't know if he was the creator. This would already be better than no crediting at all.
