Title: Tom Lautens 357
Medium: Routines on DVD Arena: Close up mentalism Available: Any shop, distributed by Murphys Magic Supplies 357 is a routine created by Tom Lautens using an older concept which is designed as a Russian Roulette type effect without a gun. The basic routine is six cards, not playing cards, representing the six chambers of a revolver are shown and all have ‘Click’ written on one side and ‘Bang’ on the other. Five of the cards are placed in envelopes with the ‘click’ up and one has ‘bang’ up. The performer then is able to determine which card has ‘bang’ written on it. As I watched this I figured I knew the score, I came up with two methods on how I figured the routine would be done, I wasn’t even close. The first thing that threw me was the spectator picked whatever envelope he wanted to use, there goes special envelopes and marking systems. Secondly was there was no peeks or anything else one would think of. I was stumped. The second routine given was set up with the cards marked ‘Win’ and ‘Lose’, again it got past me. The routines are entertaining, set up with betting which is always nice, and entertaining. The DVD was produced by Inner Mind Production and from what I’ve seen they always do a great job from camera work to lighting and sound. The presenters and instructors are Marc Spelmann and Peter Nardi, both have proven track records. They keep pumping out the products and while not all are workers I think they hit a home run with 357. The routines are presented in a straight forward manner and fully and clearly explained. Three routines using the method, which I won’t tip, is given and a bonus roulette routine is given which uses a different method that I also liked. The method for 357 might be well known but I’ve never seen it and at first, to be honest, I didn’t think it would work but after spending some time with it I realized it did work and I can’t imagine a spectator catching on to the method. It is devious. The DVD comes with six cards and six coin envelopes, you can use other envelopes but the cards are special, I’m afraid that is all I can say. The cards are blank so you can write on them for the routine you would like to perform. This effect can be done with low lighting, blind folded, all kinds of bad performing situations. Killer. This is a neat idea that I know is going into my briefcase so it will be handy if someone wants to see a little something. There is no reset, you just grab up the cards and envelopes, put them in your pocket, and you are set. It took me a bit to warm up to the routines but once I realized I could do them I quickly realized how fun they are. Well done. |

Thanks for the review.. Tom is a great guy and showed me 357 and it sparked many thoughts and ideas..
The principle is very clever and relatively unknown which seems odd as it is such a clean principle with hundreds of applications.. The feedback we have received has been great.. MS

Hi Marc, I have a problem with the opague envelopes. Like you, I used a black marker to write the words on the cards. BUT, the words are visible through the envelopes lol. I don't know if there are black pay envelopes. I now put extra white stickers on one side of the envelopes but off course that shouldn't be necessary. Should I buy new pieces and use a pencil in stead??

I picked this up thinking that I had an idea how it would be done, but liking the idea of the effect's potential. My thoughts were incorrect; this concept was totally new to me. Even knowing that I was looking for something I couldn't find anything until I watched the DVD's explanation. (Another thorough and entertaining job by the Nardi/Spelmann team by the way). The principle is devious, subtle and extremely versatile. Kudos Tom and InnerMind.

I wouldn't change the pen as black always shows up better.. In the UK we actually have the problem of our envelopes being too good, you can't see a thing through them even with a light source.. In the UK a company called WHSmith do perfect envelopes as do Rymans.. You may need to crop the cards a little but this does not effect the principle at all. If I can be of any help PM me and I'll do my best.. Best to you Patrick, I hope you enjoy 357.. ( A tip here, listen to the routine that Peter does not perform but explains about lying and truth telling. It is brilliant and totally unexplainable.) MS

I like it! Orange also catches the eye, thus why it is used on emergency items.

Really? Orange?? Personally, I'd rather get different envelopes (without having to trim the cards). I think Alakazam should try to fix this.
