A couple things here. First, you don't put the hole outside the knot, that makes absolutely no sense. Second is about a presentational aspect. Since you can easily put the hole properly and blow it up with a pump (it is beyond me how some of you are having difficulty with this routine) you should do it. The reason is simply that people will assume you are pinching the open end closed while doing the swallowing. This gives them an out. When they see the knotted end it really makes them thing because they can't figure it out beyond that. So if you do it opposite you lose out on the effect and are wasting your time. I no longer do the balloon swallowing because if a kid sees it they will likely try to duplicate it. I told a pack of kids not to try it or they could easily choke and w/in minutes of the show ending they were trying to do it, little boys are not real bright.

And then there is the hardcore street version of this trick, where the balloon is tied into a sword shape and "swallowed" down to the hilt.

The best version I've ever seen was performed at the WMS a couple of years ago. It ended with the magician openly pulling the deflated balloon out of his mouth for a logical reason and, as hard as this may seem to believe, wouldn't lead laymen to conclude that the balloon's deflation had anything to do with the secret. The magician's thinking on this was absolutely brilliant.

SteveV: Upside down, right side up, doesn't mater. It has always killed. If people want to work out a solution, they will. If you stomp your foot or wiggle your finger at the end, they will think that will have something to do with it. It's ok.
If it only works for 98% of the people I'll have to go with that. It's a staple. Even with the non blowing end gaffed, I have about 3 minutes of time to do all my jokes and squeak the heck out of it to draw a crowd. It stays inflated without pinching the ends at anytime. As for kids, I do have a concern too. But if you try to do it with a blown up balloon and it is not gaffed, it will pop very fast with no damage done. I've tried by mistake in performance. A good lesson for me to keep the gaffed and un gaffed balloons in separate places. |

I was thinking, if you swallow it mouth-end first, then you could have someone else tie it off, or even pump it. That would certaintly answer any questions.

I experienced some difficulties in hitting the right size when preparing the ballon. Sometimes it was too big, sometimes too small.
How did you overcome that problem? |

About ditching:
I like the idea of using an opaque cup to "wash it down". About 4 years ago I started ditching the balloon using the "cards from mouth" sleight. While swallowing the balloon, I steal a packet of cards from a clip at the edge of my jacket. After the entire balloon is in my mouth, I do a quick cards from mouth, stealing the deflated balloon behind the cards.

I steal out the balloon, instead of keeping it in the mouth. If you'd like details, I can put it in Secret Sessions.

It's a worthwhile precaution to give each balloon you'll be using a good rinse in clean water to remove the powder which they are coated in to prevent them from sticking to each other. I've been told that it can cause a nasty disease if you get too much of it in your system. This cleaning of balloons is even more important if you do the balloon up the nose bit where it will irritate your sinuses at the very least.

For anyone who would like to see very detailed handling instructions for balloon swallowing, I suggest you check out "The Fielding West Comedy Magic Show" DVD from L&L Publishing. It's a two disc set that includes Fieldings complete 1 hour show and disc 2 teaches the handling. I highly recommend this set, Mr. West is very entertaining and he tips some great stuff!!
