Not sure if this is the correct place for this, but currently on UKTV There is a series running on Channel Four entitled John Adams. It is an historical drama outlining the political development of the U.S. following the Revolution.
I missed the first two episodes and have only been watching bits sporadically. last week I witnessed a scene where some of the characters were sat conversing around a card table. The wife of one was absent-mindedly shuffling a pack/deck of cards. The thing is, she was giving the deck two-handed riffle shuffles. My question is, were people doing that two hundred and fifty years ago? I imagine cards of that period would be pretty cheaply produced and may not have had the 'springiness' to respond to that kind of shuffle. I shall watch out for the repeats of this excellent series, which apparently won four Golden Globes! Leslie

I believe most people did the over-hand style of shuffling with the older cards, but I'm not sure when the first noted instance of the actual riffle-shuffle started. I would email the Genii editor (kaufman) and ask him!

Good eye. Nice catch. Would never have thought of that.

The cards were not necessarily cheaply produced but the card stock was not what it is today. I have, however, had cards that old and they will riffle shuffle and waterfall fine.

But the question remains - were they actually doing riffle shuffles two hundred and fifty years ago?

Did you email Kaufman? He's always been helpful when I have a history question. another person to ask might be De'vo at the superhandz forums, he has been working on a history of manipulations for a long time, although I don't know if he would be as forthcoming with the answers as Kaufman would.
