I'm begining to think that "Three Fly" is the Color Monte of the coin world.
Sigh... |

This was, of course, present in the original routine. |

Stuart is correct, if you read Out of Control Chris Kenner incorporates the click sound of a coin arriving in the fan when he retrieves the coin from Fingerpalm. There is even an illustration depicting this Click.

Depending on how you play it, you may want to explore the silent arrivals as in Kohler's version. There are also "International" versions of the effect using distinct coins and at least one version in print using poker chips.

Were the thing set up to compete with a standard coins across I would agree with your puzzlement. I happened to be thinking more about Slydini's One Coin Routine, and tricks like "Copenetro" and "Blasted!" when starting on the project. Working from other people's interpretations and comments now... at a guess, the attraction may well be the ability to perform some magical effects that are usually only performed in parlor to the closeup realm. Ordinarily the almost visual transits are done using billiards or thimbles. This would pretty much explain the hand waving and general approach to attention management that seems common. BTW, Curtis Kam does discuss some of my thinking on this matter in his first video. Agreed about what you called coin jockeying. Much more magical when any actions are motivated by something which is consistent with the presentation and congruent to the mannerisms of the performer.

Jay, I was speaking of the original, by Jonathan Townsed, not the thing published by Chris Kenner.

Well the title of this thread is about Three Fly, which is the thing published by Chris Kenner, not Jonathan Townsend. You should be more clear that you were referring to something else.

Jay,
(so you know), Jonathan came up with the visual coin across which was, then, first published by Kenner. Tons of threads have been posted here before. A little search on the subject will give you plenty of info on this. (another) Jonathan. |

When performing Close-up, half dolars are just fine. I think that silver dollars are nice whern doing the trick in a more "parlor" setting. BTW, this very trick plays well in a "parlor" setting. I think the silver dollar made himself popular in this trick for that reason.

I recently began performing Michael Rubinstein's Retro Fly effect and it plays excremely well with silvers and with halves for lay audiences. It is constructed brilliantly and is well within the technical boundaries of intermmediate coin workers. Best of all, the good Doctor has found a terrific way to end clean with this effect.

Hi !
I personnaly use only silver dollars, for their size is ideal, related to my hands (I have pretty large hands).I simply can't feel the halves with this effect... After working on Kenner's, Kurtz, Hooser methods, I try to develop my own handling...for which I came up with each coin appearing visually; I like to let the coins sound as they arrive... |

I agree with Kenner. If you are not using Silver dollars you really loose the effect.
