In the past few days, a number of threads about producing ebooks have been prevalent.
One suggestion I would like to make is to get professional assistance in the areas of editing, typesetting and design. I mention all of this to thank Gabe Abelson for all his insightful help to me and others. For a man so accomplished in professional writing, he is extremely reasonable (largley due to his passion for the art and his joy in helping to improve Magic/Mentalism literature). The crafts of magic and mentalism deserve the effort, I humbly recommend Gabe Abelson for editing and writing assistance. I am sure you can find design assistance on the "Café" as well. Any designers, please feel free to post here as well. I know there are several... Alexander Marsh, is one. Support the guys who contribute. With regards, Sean |

Thanks for the mention Sean!
Your ebooks have always been very nicely presented and designed. I would be perfectly willing to help anyone with graphic, illustration and layout design. With an ebook you can do so much more when it comes to layout and design than you can with a printed book, due to expense and practicality.

What program do you guys use to write the ebooks?
and with pictures how do you guys take them so they don't come up with the flash and stuff like that |

...I just write (and find all the pre-design images), I pay others to work their "magic". Maybe someone else would be better suited to answer that. I jsut send the word files to my typsetter/designer (with placemarks for graphics) and let him do what he does best.

To write it... Word. Simple as that.
To change/save them as a PDF I use a program, but one can use Lulu.com for free. Images tend to go a bit 'off' in Word, so someone who knows about images, dpi, file types etc. will help you with layout and getting the quality just so. For my first book I did illustrations, purely as I don't like how printed photos look in a book and it's reminiscent of classic magic texts.

Tom Stone has a nice e-book on his web site called Self Publishing. It has a ton of great information that would help you put an e-book together and it's FREE.
I've purchased several of Tom's books. There some of the best produced books I've seen. Check it out.

Ebooks for me are a facinating area. I think there sleightly understated in there power. It's a way of communicating your effect to someone else instantly. How fantastic is that!
When I released my first ebook, the spelling was diabolical. (im not a good speller at the best of times) and this was picked up on. So now, I have freind read through it for me and double check all of the grammer and spelling. I also put mine together on word, I use "PrimoPDF" to convert it. It is a free downlaodable software that attaches to Word, Meaning you can save it in a PDF format. As for the design, I have a few freinds who desin all the tricks for me. I simply tell them what the trick is and they brush up something for me. Most designers will charge but usually not to much. Any information on these guys I can give if you PM me. Layout of the Ebook is just as important as if it were a real book. It does take a long time to get this part right but the outcome is excillenta! Just my little put in Jamie Daws

I can only second the things mentioned, such as proof reading, and to create an appealing design.
This is also an area a publisher like Lybrary.com can help. We do provide such services to our authors. We do have proof readers at hand who check the text. We also have contacts to designers. For example, we are proof reading all of Luke Jermay's ebooks we are publishing. Luke is known for his creativity but also known for his typos. A good proof reader can significantly improve such manuscripts. But the most important advice I can give, is to take your time and to re-read your own manuscript several times. Wait a week and then read it again. With some care and attention you can find many errors yourself and improve the wording.

Another nice thing about ebook publication is the ability to quickly correct errors that do creep in. Even with the best of editing and proof-reading errors can be missed. With a paper book, these can only be corrected with following editions. But with an ebook, they can be corrected in short order. In this regard I would like to commend Chris who responded quickly to some minor errors I discovered.

Gabe us currently edditing my work, and I second Sean about having it edited by Gabe, he is doing a great work, he always keep a little notice of the changes he has made with Word, and boy, much of the text there is in my manuscript us written by him now!
I can as well offer my services, not in terms of editing texts because my english has some second language difficulties, But I am a graphist, I can make covers for your books, laying out your text in the manuscript following typographic rules, I can as well draw illustrations if you don't like using pictures, I can as well make pictures using a high definition Reflex, and I can edit your pictures as well. I second much of what everyone said in this thread. Max.
