I was browsing through e-bay and found this - Bobo's Modern Coin Magic being sold for a few bucks as an e-book/pdf. Is this even legal?
P.S. I know the person is based in AU, but still... |

Bobo's is in Public Domain, anyone can publish and sell it.

The complete updated edition was published by MAGIC Inc. and is a hardcover. The public domain edition has fewer chapters and is paperback.

You can get it here for free, as well as a ton of other magic books. You do have to sign up, but it's well worth it.

MP, is it against the rules to post links to exposing websites?

The Learned Pig is not an exposure site. One has to apply to be a part of it, not just anyone can get in. I also believe that a majority of the books on the site are in the public domain. Although I may be wrong on that last part.

Thanks for clearning things up for me guys. I might stay away from it for now though.

Marko, the Learned Pig owner is concerned with making sure his material is cleared for use; he even has a link outlining copyright law. To my knowledge, everything he posts is legal.
When you apply for access, you have to answer a couple of magic questions in detail in order to be accepted. Dave

Shouldn't the author be dead for at least 50 years for the book to be in the public domain?

Enzo---
The 50 year rule seemed to go into effect on works created *after* 1 Jan 1978. For works created before that date, it looks like copyright was in effect for 28 years with an option to renew the copyright during the 28th year. Obviously tricky if the author was, in fact, no longer alive. I may be misinterpreting the info given on the site and I don't want to repost the three paragraphs as they are particularly dry. The site I found the info: http://www.abanet.org/intelprop/comm106/......yrightis Scroll down to "How long copyright protection endures." IANAL and may have misinterpreted some of the readings. You mileage may vary. |

Thanks for the information on copyright law. I never went beyond the Berne convention, since I always tend to fall asleep when I have to read legal texts and stopped bothering. The Berne convention however seems to specify a minimum duration.
It's interesting though that many works on magic must actually be in the public domain, since many were published before '77 and I doubt that the authors often bothered to renew the copyright. |

Enzo,
Look at the post again. If published and registered, but not renewed, we are talking about books published prior to 1963 being in the public domain (which still leaves a big pile). Dave

Right. Of course. But, as you say, this still leaves some of the most works. Interestingly all of these "classics" are available on Amazon, whereas hardly any of the more serious recent publications are. For instance Bobo, Royal road to card magic, Erdnase. By the way, RRTCM has a "look inside" feature and Amazon displays a "copyrighted material" disclaimer...
